Other State Related Projects

These are other projects that the members of The State have been active in...

Stella is a weekly live comedy show at Fez, a club in New York City. It stars Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter and David Wain. Stella began in January 1997, and ended their regular appearances in December 1998. Several members of the State have made cameos in the live show, as well as such popular other comedians as Janeane Garofalo and Jon Stewart.

Starting in November of 1998, Black, Showalter and Wain started producing 4 or 5 weekly clips that they specially show at their Stella shows around the holiday season. They show a new clip each Wednesday of the holiday season, starting around Thanksgiving and ending before Christmas. Between 1998 and 2000, they produced 14 clips which are about 5 to 7 minutes each, and they most likely produced new clips for the 2001 holiday season. As of now, only the first 14 clips can be found at Heavy.Com.

Various TV Apperances

Viva Variety
This was a variety show based on the Laupin sketch that debuted on Comedy Central around April '97. According to an unconfirmed source, it was the channel's highest rated program until South Park got huge around November '97. Less than a year later, the show was taken off the air. - Comedycentral.Com

Random Play
Briefly during the summer and autumn of '99, Michael Black, Michael Showalter and David Wain all wrote and acted on a weekly VH1 program called Random Play. - VH1.Com.

Tom Lennon on Friends
Over the summer, my sister told me that Tom Lennon was on Friends a few times. I didn't believe it at first, but sure enough as I checked the current status report on the Official State Website, there it stated that he played Joey's hand model in two episodes. Damn.

This got some of my friends and myself thinking: In the next episodes of Friends, Tom should show up again and be like "Hey guys, I thought I'd introduce you to some friends of my own," and his friends are the 9 (or 10) other members of The State. So then they'd all be a really big group of friends from that point on... or so it would seem. The coolest part of the episode will be at the end. Tom or Kevin Allison or someone could be like "Hey sorry, but we don't like you guys anymore, so leave," and then from that day on, the cast of Friends will be the 10 (or 11) members of The State. It's just a thought I had. Don't take it seriously.

(In the previous paragraph, feel free to replace the words "Tom Lennon" with "Ken Marino" and the word "Friends" with the words "Dawson's Creek.")
