May 8, 2005 3 AM Luke’s
Everyone had left and Luke had just locked the door. He walked over to the bar and looked at his watch. He froze when he saw the date. May 8, five years to the day that Luke had lost his son, for the second time. Luke reached behind the bar and grabbed a bottle and settled himself on a stool. It was only a few hours into this day and later he would have to be strong for Laura. It would be a hard day for her, just as it was every year. Right now all he wanted to do was drown in his grief, just as he wanted to every year. But he knew he would have one shot and then go home to Laura, just as he did every year. He just didn’t want to break tradition.
~~Flashback~~ May 1, 2000
Luke sat in his office with a half-empty bottle of some kind of liqueur. He couldn’t remember the last time he had left his office. He only ever did to go see LuLu. LuLu, his one reason for living. Bobbie was worried about him, so was Sonny, Jason, Elizabeth, Laura, even Carly. Everyone said that Lucky would always be with him in spirit, but Luke could feel more than just his spirit with him. Like Lucky was crying out over a great distance. The only one who understood was Elizabeth. He once told her that it didn’t feel like Lucky was dead, that he was out there somewhere. She said she understood because she felt the same thing. It had been over a year since Lucky died in the fire at Jason’s garage, and Luke still wasn’t grieving. He couldn’t because even though his son was gone, to Luke he wasn’t dead.
The phone rang, breaking Luke’s train of thought. “What!?” He snapped as he answered the phone. “Mr. Spencer, I was wondering if you reconsidered my offer.” “I’ve told you Krieg, that the original stone is not for sale. Give it up!” Luke answered. Krieg had been trying all year to get his hands on the Ice Princess. Luke had been tempted a few times, but could never do it. “I think I have something that will change your mind. I have your son.” “Krieg you got your information wrong. My son’s been dead for over a year.” Luke said in a tired voice, not really registering the full extent of Krieg’s words. “Oh really?” his voice was amused and it chilled Luke to the bone. A few seconds later Luke heard something he thought he never would. “Dad?” Lucky’s hoarse voice came over the phone. A little deeper and older than before, but unmistakably Lucky. “Luc…Lucky? Is that you Cowboy?” Lucky let out a half laugh half sob, “Yeah Dad it’s me.” “Convinced?” Came the harsh voice of Krieg. Luke was hit with a number of emotions: shock, joy, and finally anger. “Krieg why did you do this?” Luke hissed. An evil laughter came over the phone. “I suppose I should begin with giving you my real name.” He said slowly. “I don’t care what you real name is. It won’t matter when you’re dead!” Luke yelled. “Oh I think you’ll care. It’s Faison, Caesar Faison.” Luke could feel Faison’s smile over the phone. “I’m gonna get you Faison!” Luke promised. “I think not. Give me the Ice Princess, or you will never see your son again.” Faison said coldly. “Why now, after a year!” Luke screamed. “Because I wanted you to know what eternity would be like if you didn’t cooperate with me.” Faison said. “You can have the Ice Princess, just give me my son back.” Luke’s tone was desperate but at that point he didn’t care. “Good, in a week’s time you will have your son, and I will have the diamond.” With that he hung up. Luke mind was working at a blinding speed.

Faison’s instructions were simple, meet him at an old house on a cliff on the Spanish coast. Luke of course brought Sonny and Jason. Liz and Laura had insisted on coming, and Luke didn’t have the heart to refuse them. When Luke approached the house, he saw a young man burst out the door and go running down the to the edge of the cliff. Luke’s heart almost stopped beating, it was Lucky. A second later the person he had known as Krieg went running after Lucky with a gun. Luke ran after them both but they had a really good head start. Luke could see that Faison had caught Lucky and they were both struggling for the gun. In a split second Luke’s life ended again. They were near the cliff edge when the gun went off. Luke was juste enough to see Lucky’s eyes just before both him and Faison went over the edge of the cliff and onto the rocks below. Luke would never forget the look in his son’s eyes. Luke stared down at the waves crashing on the rocks. He took the Ice Princess out from under his coat and tossed it over the cliff. He didn’t want it anymore.
~~End Flashback~~
Luke shook himself out of the memory. After that night he finally accepted Lucky as dead. Soon after that he and Laura started getting back together. Luke took his one shot and put the bottle away. Just then there was a knock on the door. “We’re closed!” Luke yelled. “Luke? It’s Robbie Chase.” She yelled from outside. Luke looked at the door as if asking it a question. He hadn’t heard from Robbie in over a month. The last time he saw her was at Kelly’s when he introduced her to Liz. He’d just figured she’d left town. “I don’t know if you remember me, but could you please open the door?” She yelled again. Luke walked slowly to the door and unlocked it and let Robbie in. “Hi Robbie, I haven’t seen you in a while.” Luke said. “Yeah, I’ve been out of town.” She said quietly, looking back towards Luke’s office. “So are you staying this time?” Luke looked at her strangely. He couldn’t figure out why she was looking at his office. “Maybe, um… Luke there’s something you need to see in your office.” She looked nervous. “Like what? I already know what’s in there.” Luke said amused. “Just… come with me to your office.” “OK” Luke said laughing. He led her into his office. Luke was surprised to find someone sitting in his chair, but the chair was turned around so he couldn’t see who it was. “Hey, what are you doing in here?” Luke snapped. He looked at Robbie, but her face was a controlled calm. The chair slowly turned around, and Luke’s heart almost stops. If Luke had control over his mouth, there would be so many things he would what to say. As it was he could only utter one word. “Lucky?”

“Hi Dad.” Was all Lucky could say. He was grinning so much his face hurt. “Cowboy?” Luke said in a whisper. He was staring at Lucky like he might disappear any second. Lucky let out a half-sob, half-laugh. “Yeah Dad, it’s me, I’m back.” He said, standing up. Luke put his hand on the high-backed chair, to steady himself. He was going to fall over if he wasn’t careful. Robbie smiled. “I’ll leave the two of you alone.” “No.” Lucky said quickly. “Robbie, I need you to help me explain some of this.” Luke looked at Robbie, what did she have to do with this. Robbie only nodded her head. Luke looked back at his son. ‘Wow, his son, home.’ Luke thought. He wasn’t even forming sentences in his mind. He walked over to Lucky and put his hands on the sides of his face, and looked searchingly into his eyes. As if to make sure it was really him, if he was still Lucky. He wondered what had happened to him. “How?” He whispered. Luke still wasn’t forming sentences, but he didn’t care. “Hey, I always live up to my name don’t I?” Lucky said smiling. Luke let out a small laugh. “If you wouldn’t mind I’d like specifics.” “Sit down, old man.” Lucky said smiling. He moved out of the way so Luke could sit in his chair. “Smart a**.” Luke said as he sat down. Robbie sat down on one of the chairs in the office and Lucky sat down in the large high-backed chair that Luke always kept in the office. Lucky leaned back and put his feet on the desk like he had done years ago. Luke couldn’t stop smiling at his son. Lucky still had his lanky form, but he was taller, still a few inches shy of Luke though. ‘At least I’m still taller’ Luke smiled at that thought. He let out a big sigh, “Where have you been for the last five years?” he said slowly. “Well up until about a year ago, I couldn’t remember who I was.” Lucky said slowly. Luke looked at him in astonishment, silently waiting for him to continue. “Almost five years ago I woke up in a hospital in Spain, and Robbie was there.” Lucky said as he turned to Robbie, to let her fill in the blanks. “My father owned a fishing company, and we found him in one of our nets.” Luke looked stunned, “We thought he was dead, but by some miracle he was alive so we took him to a nearby hospital. My father continued on the fishing run and I stayed with Lucky. He woke up three weeks later and couldn’t remember anything. My father said he could stay with us and work in the company. So, when he recovered I took him back to Norway, where we were living at the time.” Robbie explained. Luke looked at Lucky with an amused look on his face; “You were a fisherman in Norway?” Luke said, somehow not being able to picture his son doing that. Lucky laughed, “No I never quite got the hang of it, but I did find out that I had a talent with computers.” “That’s an understatement” Luke smirked. “I did most of the business stuff.” Lucky said “So do you have all of your memory back now?” Luke asked. “Yeah I remember everything.” Lucky said, “About a year ago I started remembering things, and it came back to me gradually after that.” Luke looked at Robbie “You were here last month as a spy for him.” Luke said accusingly. Lucky laughed, “Hey, I had to scope things out before I came back.” Luke shook his head in exasperation, when a frightening thought accrued to him, “Faison! Did he survive?” “I don’t know.” Lucky said regretfully, “When I finally remembered what happened I checked the newspapers of that area and there had been a body found around that time. But we can’t be sure that it was Faison.” The wheels in Luke’s head were spinning. They were spinning so fast he almost forgot about something. Luke jumped up from his chair like someone had kicked him. Lucky looked at him like he lost his mind. “Dad, what’s wrong?” “Laura, your mother is going to kill me!” Luke said rushing to the coat rack, “First, cause it’s almost four in the morning. And second cause I didn’t bring you right home as soon as I saw you.” Lucky laughed, his dad was almost giddy. “She’s gonna be so happy.” Luke continued in a rush, trying to get Lucky and Robbie out the door. “And Bobbie, and Eliza…” Luke stopped short, a troubled expression on his face. “It’s all right Dad, I know about her and Nikolas.” Lucky said evenly. Then he walked out of the office followed by Robbie. Luke took a deep breath and followed them out. He wondered how Liz was going to take this news. |
