Wolves-- Chapters 5 & 6

Luke walked into his house and shut the door behind Lucky and Robbie. He saw the light on in the kitchen. He knew Laura was waiting up for him. She had done that ever since he moved back in. Not that he minded.
“You’re late.” Laura called from inside the kitchen; “You better either have ice cream or flowers.”
“I got something better!” Luke called back.
“What could you have that’s better than ice…” Laura stopped cold as she came out of the kitchen and laid eyes on her son.
Luke walked over to her, “Breathe Baby, breathe.” Luke said as he put his hands on her shoulders. Laura looked up at him in disbelief.
Luke nodded, “It’s really him. He’s home.”
Laura put her hands to her mouth and tears spilled from her eyes. She almost ran to Lucky and flung her arms around him. She was sobbing now, her body shaking in Lucky’s arms.
“Geez I thought you’d be happy to see me.” Lucky joked, even though tears were streaming down his own face.
Laura pulled away from him slightly and hit him half-jokingly on the arm. “You had to get your father’s sense of humor, didn’t you.” Laura said still sobbing.
Lucky put his hands on his mother’s face and in her hair. “Oh Mom, I missed you.” He said smiling.
“Oh my baby boy,” Laura said sobbing and pulling him into her arms again. “We all missed you so much.”
Robbie wiped the tears from her face, seeing her friend finally reunited with his mother was getting to her. Even Luke had tears in his eyes.
Laura pulled away from Lucky and looked a little puzzled. “Where have you been for five years?”
“Well let’s sit down and I’ll explain.” Lucky said leading her over to the couch and Luke and Robbie sat down with them. Lucky told her everything about the last five years and how Robbie had helped save him. Laura, of course, was grateful to the girl who had taken care of her son. By the time they were all finished discussing things it was close to five in the morning.
Luke ushered Lucky and Robbie upstairs to go to sleep. Once they were upstairs Luke put his arm around Laura.
“He’s really here, isn’t he?” Laura asked, in a little girl voice.
“Yep, Baby. He’s here.” Luke said smiling.
Luke then led her upstairs to bed. Both of them feeling truly complete for the first time in years.

Upstairs in the guest room.

Robbie was sitting on the bed putting her long hair into a braid for the night. There was a soft knock on the door and then Lucky walked in. Robbie looked up at him and smiled. Lucky sat down next to her, with a worried expression on his face.
“Are you all right?” He asked.
Robbie looked at him puzzled.
“Well I thought maybe seeing me with my family might bring up memories of yours.” He clarified.
Robbie’s eyes darkened at the mention of her family. “I’m fine Lucky, you don’t have to worry about me. Remember, that’s my job.” She joked.
“Yeah, but who worries about you?” He said softly.
Robbie shot him a stern look.
“All right, I’ll back off.” Lucky said putting his hands up in defense. “Thank you for helping me with this.”
Robbie laughed a little, “What else was I going to do, sit in this month’s tiny fishing town and supervise the business? You know I’ve been bored to tears ever since…” She faltered not really wanting to say what actually happened out loud. “… since I took over.”
Lucky smiled sadly, “Yeah I know, but thank you anyway.”
“No problem. Now go get some sleep.” She said pushing him off the bed and towards the door.
“Yes Mom.” Lucky said mockingly as he shut the door.
“Smart A**” She said to the closed door.

Later that morning.
Around 8 AM

Elizabeth walked in to the Spencer house using her key.
“Laura?” she called. “I know we were supposed to meet at Kelly’s for breakfast, but I woke up early and figured we could walk together. I hope you don’t mind.” She walked toward the kitchen, figuring that was where Laura was.
Behind her, Lucky came down the stairs slowly.  He was awed and a little nervous at seeing her again. She was so beautiful; she almost looked exactly the same. Elizabeth peaked into the kitchen and when she saw that no one was there she turned around to see if she was upstairs. When Liz turned around her heart stopped.
“Lucky?”
Lucky let out a breath he didn’t even know he was holding. “Elizabeth.” He whispered breathlessly.
It was at that moment that Liz’s knees gave and she fell unconscious to the floor.

“Elizabeth!” Lucky cried as he rushed over to her. He picked her up and carried her to the couch, as Robbie ran down the stairs.
“What’s the matter?” She asked.
“She saw me and she just fainted.” Lucky said helplessly.
“I don’t blame her.” Robbie said, “Why don’t you go upstairs, it’s probably not good idea if she sees you again.”
Laura came down stairs to investigate the noise and rushed over when she saw Liz on the couch.
“She saw you?” Laura asked frantically. Lucky only nodded his head.
“Go, we’ll take care of her.” Robbie insisted. Lucky reluctantly headed upstairs. Robbie took Liz’s left hand to try and wake her up and noticed something on her ring finger.
‘Oh geez, this complicates things.’ Robbie thought to herself.
Elizabeth began to stir and Robbie moved so that Laura could sit next to her.
“Liz, honey, wake up” Laura said gently.
Liz opened her eyes slowly and then looked around in confusion, “What am I doing here?” She said groggily “I was dreaming that I saw…”
“Liz honey there’s something that we need to tell you.” Laura said slowly.
Liz’s eyes traveled to Robbie in confusion, not really registering what Laura said. “Who are you?”
“Robbie, I’m a friend.” Robbie answered.
“Liz we need to tell you something.” Laura repeated.
“What Laura?”
“The dream you said you had,” Laura started, “Well, it wasn’t a dream, honey.”
“But in my dream Lucky was standing right over…” She looked at Laura in surprise, “But that’s not possible Laura, Lucky died.” Liz insisted.
“I know honey, but he didn’t, he’s back.” Laura knew how this would effect Liz and was a little concerned for her.
“What?” Liz asked sounding like a five-year-old.
“He’s alive sweetie.” Laura said barely containing her tears.
Liz looked up at Laura with shock in her eyes.
“I’ll go get him.” Robbie said softly and turned to go up the stairs.
“How?” Liz asked Laura softly.
“Well, as far as we know he must have gotten pulled out to sea after he went over that cliff. Robbie and her family rescued him and took care of him. He had lost his memory and only started getting it back a year ago.” Laura said, giving Liz the short version. Then Lucky and Robbie came down the stairs slowly. Laura stood and walked over to Robbie and both of them went upstairs to give Liz and Lucky some privacy.
Lucky slowly walked to her and sat on the couch. Liz slowly lifted her hand and softly touched his cheek. Almost like she was afraid that he would disappear, just like he had done all too often in her dreams.
Lucky reached up and touched her hand and tears came to his eyes.
“Elizabeth.” He said softly.
Liz smiled through her own tears. “No one, except Luke, has called me that in six years.”
Liz reached out and pulled him into her arms, so happy to hold him again. Then suddenly her conscience kicked in and a name popped in to her head. ‘Nikolas’
Liz pulled out of Lucky’s embrace quickly and looked at him uncertainly.
“Oh Lucky.” She said, not knowing quite how to word it. Then her eyes drifted down to her left ring finger. Lucky’s eyes followed hers and his whole world fell apart.
“You’re marrying him?” Lucky asked in shock.
“How did you know I was with Nikolas?” She asked in confusion.
Lucky sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “A month ago Robbie came to town to check things out for me.”
Liz nodded, remembering meeting Robbie in Kelly’s. “ ‘Check things out?’ Lucky, why didn’t you just come home?” Liz asked in exasperation. “Laura said you started remembering things a year ago. Is that correct?”
Lucky nodded his head in conformation.
“Why didn’t you come home then?” Liz said not understanding how he could wait so long.
“I wanted to get everything straight in my head first.” Lucky knew someone was going to be mad about that, but for some reason he never thought it would be Elizabeth.
“When was it straight in your head Lucky? I want to know the exact date.”
“Elizabeth, that doesn’t matter now. We can be together.” Lucky said pleading.
“When, Lucky?” She insisted.
Lucky ran a hand through his hair and closed his eyes, “About nine months ago.”
“Nine months!” she yelled, “Why didn’t you come back?”
Lucky knew this was a betrayal in her eyes, letting her grieve longer than she had to. “I had things I had to take care of.”
Liz shook her head, “I can’t think straight right now. I need to go.” She said getting up and walking quickly to the door.
“Are you going to Nikolas?” Lucky said with a twinge of anger in his voice.
“Well I’m sure he would like to know that his brother’s alive.” Liz said and then turned and left.
Robbie came down the stairs slowly. Lucky looked at her with tears in his eyes. Robbie noticed he was shaking. Robbie quickly went to him and pulled him into her arms. Lucky hugged her so tightly that she almost couldn’t breathe.
When he finally let her go, she looked at him and said, “Didn’t go as planned, huh?”
Lucky smiled and shook his head.
Robbie made him sit down. “What happened?”
“She’s mad I didn’t come home nine months ago.”
“I would be too.” Robbie said matter-of-factly.
Lucky looked at her shocked, “But you know why I stayed!”
“I know. You stayed for me, and I thank you for that. I needed you. But she doesn’t know that.” Robbie said soothingly.
“Why don’t we just get outta here.” Lucky said, he was still a little angry and hurt, he just wanted to run. “The fishing fleet is probably in Alaska by now, let’s go there.”
Robbie gave him a ‘Yeah, right.’ Look. “What’s changed Lucky?”
Lucky looked down at the floor. “She’s marrying him, Robbie.”
“Yeah I know, so what?” She said unfazed.
Lucky looked at her like she was nuts. He didn’t even wonder how she knew about Liz’s engagement, he knew her to well to think that the ring would escape her attention. “It changes everything!”
“What does it change?” She said shocked, “Do you still have faith in the love you two share?”
Lucky nodded, “But she’s marrying him Robbie!”
Robbie looked disapprovingly at Lucky. “Have you learned nothing from me?”
Lucky looked at her questioningly.
Robbie leaned towards him with a mischievous glint in her eyes. “You can’t get what you want unless you do a little work.”
Lucky smiled. “What’s going on in that twisted little brain of yours?”
Robbie just shrugged and smiled like she had a plan.
“I knew there was a reason you’re my best friend!” Lucky exclaimed throwing his arms around her. Robbie smiled sadly at that.
She pulled back and said, “Your mom’s upstairs explaining things to LuLu. You wanna go up and see her?”
“Oh yeah.” Lucky said smiling. Robbie always knew how to make him feel better.
