I made this theme in the run up to the World Cup - yes I admit to
getting caught up in the fever that was France98 - here then is
my tribute to England in France98.
This page is not
being updated and is here to record our hopes and fears prior to
and following England's feeble attempt to win the 1998 World Cup.
Since then we have experienced the thrills of Euro 2000 and our
abortive attempt to win the right to host the 2006 World Cup (I
blame it on the labour government myself)!. Now 34 years of hurt
..........
They think it's all over.... it is
now!!
The greatest side-show of modern times has come
and gone with France winning the 1998 FIFA World Cup -
congratulations to the French National side and my
commiserations to the other nations that didn't make it
this time - roll on 2002!!
We in England can look back on this World Cup as
one in which we had our best chance for many years to re-capture
some of the magic that we last felt in 1966 when England, like
France, won the World Cup as hosts of the event. England crashed
out of the World Cup following a disgraceful retaliation from
David Beckham following a foul on him by an Argentinean player.
David Beckham was sent off shortly after the start of the second
half and England had to re-take Goose Green all over again - they
played their hearts out for nearly 75 minutes only to loose the
penalty shoot out 4-3 with Ince and Batty both missing their
brave attempts. It really is a cruel way to decide the outcome of
such a classic match - we had it won in the first half and in my
humble opinion David Beckham threw it away..... and that's coming
from a life long Man United supporter. I have had comments left
in my guestbook that I shouldn't blame David Beckham, I
dont blame David Beckham. I don't blame
anyone. But the fact remains that the foul by David Beckham was
unprofessional, petulant and unnecessary and if you want to play
at the highest level for your country then you have to learn to
take the rough with the smooth.
Looking forward, as one must do when faced with
set-backs, I hope England can re-build their spirits in time for
the European Cup in 2000. We must also all get behind England's
bid to secure the 2006 FIFA World Cup and collectively work
towards eradicating the small hooligan element from the
supporters here in England - I was fortunate to attend the
Argentina vs Holland match in Marseilles and it didnt make
me proud to be English in that town!!
Michael Owen proved that England have a bright
future ahead of them and if David Beckham can learn to control
his emotions on the pitch then I hope we see many more glorious
goals like the one David Beckham scored against Columbia in the
30th minute of the final game of the pre-qualifying round.
