features yet another free desktop theme based on one of the BBC's
oldest if not funniest sitcoms - The
Likely Lads.
Set in the north-east of England, the series featured two young electrical workers, James Bolam as Terry Collier and Bob Ferris as Rodney Brewes - The Likely Lads. The series arose out of a sketch written by Dick Clement with friend Ian La Frenais for the exam part of his BBC directors course. The duo were to go on and pen many other successful comedy sitcoms including, Porridge and Auf Wiedersehen Pet.
The central characters were markedly different in character and attitudes, particularly towards the class system. Terry was brash, aggressive, only interested in girls and resigned to his proletarian station in life. Bob was Terry's alto ego, diffident, cautious, scared of authority (particularly if it had a posh accent), and almost pitiful in his belief that he could escape the class trap if he only worked hard enough. Despite their over-a-pint philosophizing, each would view the other's approach with leaden dismay. Not least because their escapades usually originated by Terry always ended in tears.
The show appeared on British television between the years 1965-69 (26 x 30min episodes) and it is not difficult to view the show as a critique of the supposed social mobility of the swinging sixties, winging sixties more like. In 1973 Terry and Bob were bought back for a revival , Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads? which proved every bit as popular and successful as the original, something not always achieved by sequels! During 1973-74, 47 x 30min episodes appeared to delight the British viewing public. In this revival series the ill-fated pair were four years older, with Terry having spent the intervening years in the army and a failed marriage. Bob, meanwhile, had risen up the career ladder to a white collar worker and become engaged to the boss's pushy daughter, the frightening Thelma, played by Brigit Forsyth. Bob had bought a house of his own and taken to holidays on the Costa Brava and enjoyed meals in restaurants. Terry's attack on such bourgeois delusions was remorseless. There was also a touching vein of social commentary on the bewildering changes to the industrial north-east during the seventies. With the end of the TV run (by which time Bob and Thelma had married) the misadventures of Bob and Terry continued in 1975 in a radio version then a 1976 feature film, The Likely Lads.

It maybe a sign of the show's generous age but I could only find a single web page featuring The Likely Lads on the web. If you find others please let me know - I will add them here for subsequent visitors to explore.
