Wine written and created by Roy Clarke.
Last of the
Summer Wine is probably one of the longest
running and best loved comedy shows that the BBC has produced to
date. It's success is its charm and its charm are the clever
scripts and central characters that have made this series one of
the BBC's best loved comedy shows.
The series follows the second-childhood adventures of three
old codgers, one-time school chums now retired, as they wonder
about their West Yorkshire village and the surrounding
countryside conversing idly and usually getting into trouble. Clegg is played
by fine comedy actor Peter
Sallis, the voice of Wallace of Wallace and
Gromit fame. The neatly (if shabbily) dressed philosopher of the
trio, he is a widower who retired early from his employment as a
lino salesman. Cautious and skeptical, his is the voice of reason
which if the others ever paid any heed, would make their lives
less hazardous but also less interesting. His characteristic
sartorial accoutrements include a flat cap and a plastic mac. The
unhygienic Compo
played by actor Bill Owen,
occupies the opposite end of the intellectual spectrum and is not
really retired, having never actually been what you might call
employed! He was once married but during the War his wife ran off
with a fishing pole and he and his ferret now live in
lodgings rented from the formidable Nora
Batty, played by the incomparable Kathy Staff ,
she of the hair curlers and wrinkled stockings. The final member
of the trio is Foggy,
played by actor Brian Wilde,
retired Army and a keen leader of men. After six series and a
handful of holiday specials, Wilde decided to leave the series in
1986 but was later to return for the 1990 series to reunite one
of the most successful trios in contemporary British comedy.

Last of the Summer Wine
is the longest running sitcom that the BBC has ever produced
and as such spans generations who either love it or loathe it. It
first appeared in 1973 as a pilot episode, as part of the Comedy
Playhouse season, entitled Of Funerals and Fish. The first series
of six episodes was broadcast later that year between 12th
November and 17th December. With 170 episodes already shown
including numerous Christmas and New Year specials, it has just
completed its 19th series with at least one more in the can due
out later this year. Bill Owen who plays Compo is quite
remarkable at 83 to even want to remain involved with such a
tiring film schedule. In a recent interview he gave no hint that
he was ready to quit and indeed predicted many more episodes to
come.
In 1988 the producers tried spinning off a prequel
entitled First of the Summer Wine which
was not successful enough to extend beyond two series. In this prequel
set in 1939, Compo, Clegg and Foggy appear as younger 18 year-old
versions of the older codgers that we have come to know and love.
All episodes were produced by Mike Stephens. Richard Lumsden
played Foggy Dewhurst, Paul Wyett played Compo Simmonite
and David Fenwick played Norman Clegg.
