You may think it strange that on a web site dedicated to some of the best in BBC TV comedy shows (hence beebfun!) you find me singing the praises of a Channel 4 comedy called Father Ted. The simple reason is that it ranks with some of the best BBC comedies of all time and should have been on BBC TV!! Seriously, Father Ted is both funny and original, two essential qualities for real greatness and I am proud to be able to bring you the first Father Ted Desktop Theme on the Net.
Created by Graham Lineman and Arthur Matthews, Father Ted stars Dermot Morgan as Father Ted Crilly; Ardal O'Hanlon as the young Father Dougal McGuire; Frank Kelly as the bon viveur, Father Jack "Feck" Hackett and Pauline McLynn as the housekeeper from hell, Mrs Doyle. The show was produced by Hat Trick Productions for Channel 4 and represented a superior clerical caper, following the misadventures of an unholy trinity of priests - relatively sensible Ted, permanently inebriated Jack ("Drinks! Gurrls! Feck!"), transcendentally dim Dougal - living on God-forsaken Craggy Island somewhere off the west coast of Eire/Ireland. Dithering old Mrs. Doyle ensured a constant supply of tea to all that called. Blessed, as it was, with outstanding performances, it also had a heavenly absurdity: Mrs. Doyle's bad back was cured after tripping over a hampster's bicycle and falling down the stairs (the hamster later rode off...), while minor character Father Duff repeatedly died and reappeared. There was no internal logic whatsoever! Innocently. almost childishly daft, the show was deluged with awards, although it took a repeat of the first season for some to see the joke!
Father Ted first appeared on British Television on 21st April 1995. Three series were made with a total of 19 x 30 minute episodes shown between 1995-98. Sadly, the untimely death of Dermot Morgon, who died of a heart attack in April 1998, days before the scheduled screening of the first episode of Series 3 has sealed the fate of this successful TV show which had a world-wide following. Father Ted will be missed.....
