DAVID'S APARTMENT/SAME DAY
CINDY is sprawled out on the sofa, a half-filled martini glass in
her hand. Her eyes are partially closed as she starts to hum to
herself. DAVID comes up behind the sofa, grinning.
DAVID
Has anyone ever told you that your voice resembles a divine
prophecy?
CINDY
(opening her eyes and turning around to look at him)
No, but I've been told that I can shatter glass with it. So how
do you think our little announcement went over at Cory?
DAVID
Sank like a rock. But at least we shook them up a bit...it will
keep things hopping in that office, if nothing else.
CINDY
(grinning)
You enjoy conflict, don't you?
DAVID
I enjoy conflict in the business world. It's the only way to
learn anything new.
CINDY
What about in your personal life? Do you enjoy conflict there,
too?
DAVID
To an extent. But it's a different kind of conflict.
CINDY
A different kind of conflict? You mean throwing statues at each
other?
DAVID
(laughing)
Of course not. But a little disagreement in a relationship keeps
it fresh and new...wouldn't you agree?
CINDY
I don't know...Grant and I argued all the time and after awhile,
it just became same old, same old.
DAVID
You really should get away from thinking about him.
CINDY
Grant?
DAVID
Yes, Grant. You seem to be forgetting that he made you feel
worthless...made you feel like you weren't a real person.
CINDY
I loved him.
DAVID
You loved the Grant you painted in your mind. You didn't love the
Grant that everyone else saw.
CINDY
(angrily)
How would you know this? You weren't there when we first fell in
love...you didn't see how he was to me. You didn't see when he
really loved me.
DAVID
No, I didn't. But I can see it in your eyes when you talk about
him, Cindy.
CINDY
(Standing up and moving away from him)
You can't even remember the last year of your life and you're
telling me what I should be feeling?
DAVID
You're better than him, Cindy. You should realize this and rise
above this image of yourself...you're worth it.
CINDY
(tears in her eyes)
It's been a long time since anyone told me I'm worth it.
DAVID
Maybe I should tell you more often.
Cindy moves into his arms.
CINDY
Can you tell me again? (She kisses him) Can you tell me again and
again?
As they begin kissing, we:

JAKE'S OFFICE AT THE HERALD/NIGHT
JAKE is in his office at the Herald as his phone rings.
JAKE
McKinnon.
CUT TO: VICKY at Brava
VICKY
Guess who?
JAKE
I was starting to wonder where you were. I just called the house.
VICKY
I'm still at Brava. I finally got Amanda to give me a juicy
article, but the deadline is tonight so I'm going to have to work
late.
JAKE
You shouldn't be working late.
VICKY
Jake, what are you talking about? You're working late.
JAKE
I don't like the idea of you over there in that office at night.
VICKY
Honey, I'm fine. Amanda's here too.
JAKE
(Sarcastically)
Oh, well as long as Amanda's there. I'm sorry, but I'm worried
about my beautiful wife and babies.
VICKY
I promise, everything is fine. I'll even call you before I leave.
JAKE
I have an even better idea. Why don't I come over there and help
you with the article? Then we can go home and snuggle up in the
corner and --
VICKY
You have a one track mind, McKinnon. I'm not going to be able to
concentrate at all now.
JAKE
Just do one thing for me, VIck.
VICKY
Anything.
JAKE
Call me when you're ready to leave, and I'll come and get you. I
don't want you out walking around in that parking lot at night.
VICKY
(laughing)
Okay, I promise. I'll call you. Now stop worrying.
JAKE
Okay. I'll talk to you soon.
VICKY
Jake?
JAKE
Yeah?
VICKY
I love you.
JAKE
I love you too, honey. Bye.
VICKY
Bye.
Vicky hangs up the phone and smiles. She picks up a framed
picture of Jake and the boys sitting on her desk.
VICKY
I'm the luckiest woman in the whole world.

THE HARBOR CLUB/THAT NIGHT
HAYLEY is standing at the hostess station. The Harbor Club is
quiet, only a few patrons. Donna sits at the bar. LORNA walks in
the front of the restaurant and upon seeing Hayley, walks over to
her.
LORNA
Hello, Hayley
Hayley looks up, surprised.
HAYLEY
Lorna...hi...what are you doing here? Are you here for dinner?
LORNA
Actually, no, I came to see you.
HAYLEY
Look, if this is about today---
LORNA
It is about today. I'm just here to talk to you. Hayley, I'm not
sure what's going on, but I just want you to know that if you
hurt my mother, if you use my mother, I will not let you live it
down.
HAYLEY
Is that what you think? That I'm using her? You're wrong, Lorna.
You are so off-base.
LORNA
Then what is it? Tell me what you're doing. You just met my
mother and already, she's helping you with an adoption? Are you
after her money? Are you here with some strange vendetta?
HAYLEY
Maybe it's just as it seems...she's helping me because she's a
good person--
LORNA
--that's right, she IS a good person. Which is why I don't want
you hurting her.
HAYLEY
I would never hurt her. I have no reason to want to hurt her.
LORNA
Then what is it, Hayley? Why did you gravitate towards her?
HAYLEY
I don't understand why you're being so suspicious of me. What
have I done?
LORNA
When I came in here to get that picture that night...the one I'd
left on the table...you were looking at it so intently. Almost as
if you knew something about it.
HAYLEY
(beginning to look panicky)
You're wrong.
LORNA
I don't think I am.
Hayley and Lorna are silent as we:
