Witches and Hecate

The three witches of Macbeth and their "double, double, toil and trouble" incantations are famous. They embody evil and are driven primarily by a desire to exercise power over the natural world. In this, they come into competition with Hecate, the goddess of Chaos. Indeed, as time goes on, the influence of Hecate, of mindless destruction (as in the killing of Malcolm's family) increases, even as Lady Macbeth's powers fade.
