News for Week of 27 May 2002

07 June 2002
Arantxa and Jared lost in the semifinals to Elena Bovina and Mark Knowles 3-6 3-6. With this defeat, Arantxa's 2002 Roland Garros campaign comes to a close. Overall, it's been a disappointing campaign for Arantxa as she failed to progress beyond the first hurdle in both her sigles and doubles. It's been a bit of consolation in the mixed doubles, but it would've been great if she and Jared can at least make the finals. This also brings an end to the clay court season, at least where major clay events are concerned. Next up, two weeks of grass court tennis before Wimbledon comes around.

04 June 2002
Arantxa and Jared booked a place in the mixed doubles semifinals with a commanding win over Vinci and Vizner. They will play the unseeded pair of Mark Knowles of Bahamas and Elena Bovina of Russia, who upset the sixth seeded pair of Daniela Hantuchova and Kevin Ulleytt in the quarterfinals. Hantuchova and Ulleytt is one red hot pairing after having won the mixed doubles title in the Australian Open. That was also Hantuchova's second consecutive mixed doubles title and she has yet to lose a match in mixed competition. Therefore, Knowles and Bovina must be playing really well to beat Ulleytt and Hantuchova. Hopefully, Arantxa and Jared can continue their dominating form and reach their second mixed doubles final together.

03 June 2002
Arantxa and Jared Palmer are starting to get the results as they defeated the French pairing of Fusai and Varlet to move into the quarterfinals against Italian Roberta Vinci and Czech Pavel Vizner. Hopefully, they can go all the way this time and do a repeat of US Open 2000.

02 June 2002
Arantxa and Jared Palmer moved into the second round of the mixed doubles with a three set win over Nicolas Coutelot and Emilie Loit 6-2 2-6 6-4. They will play yet another French combo in Alexandra Fusai and Julien Varlet. It's great to see Arantxa into the second week at Roland Garros, else it probbaly will be difficult for me to keep my attention on Roland Garros given the current ongoing World Cup.

31 May 2002
This is fast becoming a very forgettable Roland Garros for Arantxa. She just crashed out of the doubles event with Daniela, losing 3-6 4-6. Things just do not get better after yesterday's disappointment in singles. Arantxa has only the mixed doubles event left to compete in.

30 May 2002
Arantxa mentioned in the post-match interview that she is very disappointed about her loss, but the good news is that, this defeat is not going to make her retire. She said it well, you do not retire just becuase you lose a match. There are a lot more factors at play when you make such a big decision. Arantxa returns to court today with Daniela Hantuchova to play their first round doubles match. In mixed doubles, Arantxa and Jared Palmer are seeded first and will play Emilie Loit and Nicolas Coutelot in the first round. Arantxa and Jared have not done very well together since their US Open victory in 2000 over Kournikova and Mirnyi. Most of the time, they have lost in the early rounds, so hopefully they can do some damage here at Roland Garros.

Well, I don't know what to say. Arantxa just crashed out of Roland Garros, losing to Marta Marrero 0-6 1-6. I cannot begin to tell you how sad and disappointed I feel right now, and I'm sure you fans out there feel the same. For her to lose 0 and 1 in the very tournament where she had her greatest moments in her career is really very heartbreaking to see. Arantxa committed an uncharacteristic 35 unforced errors and lost the match in just 52 minutes. It's just like she had lost the desire to play, to fight, and I am really worried. I am not sure how much this loss will affect Arantxa, and I think some of us fans are worried that any one defeat will prompt Arantxa to simply give up playing altogether and head for retirement. I hope I am just being pessimistic but I fear that she will announce her retirement after Roland Garros. Arantxa also lost in the first round of the Australian Open earlier this year and this is her worst showing at Roland Garros since she made her debut in 1987.

28 May 2002
It seems like Arantxa will not get to play her first round match today after her match, originally scheduled as the last on Court 3, was taken off the schedule list. It has been a rainy second day at Roland Garros and many of the matches were either suspended or rescheduled. Yesterday already saw eighth seed Sandrine Testud crash out in straight sets. Earlier today, Amanda also lost in straight sets to German Martina Muller(she gave Arantxa a tough match in Hamburg), while a few other lower seeds also lost. A few of the higher seeds struggled to win their matches. Seles lost the first set before overcoming Angeles Montolio, Kim CLijsters had a difficult time against Tatiana Poutchek before winning 8-6 in the third. But the biggest surprise today must be the defeat of Justine Henin, who lost to Aniko Kapros 6-4 1-6 0-6. Henin had won the German Open and reached the final of the Italian Open prior to Roland Garros, so this is really a big shock.

27 May 2002
Arantxa officially fell out of the Top 20 this week and began her 16thRoland Garros campaign ranked 29th. She is seeded 15th this year and plays fellow Spaniard Marta Marrero in the first round. In doubles, Arantxa and Daniela are seeded 4th and are scheduled to play the 7th seeded pair of Dementieva and Husarova, who had beaten them twice already this year. Hopefully, Arantxa can have a good Roland Garros this year and re-enter the Top 20. Of course, she is on course to adding on to the lone doubles title she won with Daniela in Amelia Island given their splendid form the past few tournaments.
