Winter 2001 Assignment 2

Techniques: Spam

Project Abstract

The single most frustrating and annoying issue facing system and network administrators these days is the issue of SPAM: unrequested, unwanted and almost unstoppable bulk "commercial" e-mailings. This problem is so huge that several organizations have sprung up dedicated to its irradication. Unfortunately, there policies tend to hamper only the accidental relay sites and not the original spammer.

Prepare a report on SPAM. Investigate the organizations (like SPAMCOP) and describe how they attempt to stop SPAM. Also investigate the methods that spammers use to thwart attempts to stop them. Can you demonstrate how to automatially recognize SPAM from any other e-mail sent to a user?
