Day 7 - 10: Northern Thailand Hill Tribe Trek Today we will begin our four-day trek into the hills of Northern Thailand. This adventure will give you a glimpse into the lives of the local hill tribes. We will leave unnecessary baggage in the hotel storage and travel by song teow to the starting point of our trek. Yao will serve as our guide and share many stories of the hill tribe cultures. During the trek we will meet and stay with the Karen, Lisu, Lahu, and Chan tribes. Each hill tribe has their own unique language and culture. Because the trek will involve hiking 2-6 miles daily up and down hills, it is necessary that you are healthy and reasonably fit. Besides hiking through jungles and rice fields, you will also experience elephant riding and bamboo river rafting. Meals will be cooked over a fire along with a cooking lesson from Yao. Accommodation will be basic as we will sleep as the hill tribes do dorm-style with blankets on the floor of a villlage bamboo hut. On our final day we will return to Chiang Mai in the afternoon for some rest and relaxation. Upon completing the trek, you will feel a wonderful sense of accomplishment along with a great appreciation for different cultures. (Day 7 B, L, D; Day 8 B, L, D; Day 9 B, L, D; Day 10 B, L) Day 11 & 12: Explore Chiang Mai After four days of roughing it, today is your day to relax and shop. We will meet in the morning and then go to the handicraft village. There you can shop and buy your souvenirs. We will visit the silk, silver, jewelry, gems, paper, wood carving, lacquireware, and celadon pottery craft villages. In the afternoon we will go for a relaxing two hour Thai massage. Then in the evening, explore the night market for more great souvenirs. (Day 11 B) Today may be your most delicious as you partake in a full-day Thai cooking class beginning at 9:30am. During your class, you will visit a local market where your cooking teacher will describe the various Thai ingredients. Next you will spend the day preparing, cooking, and eating your favorite Thai dishes that you have made. (Day 12 B, L) Day 13: Travel to & Explore Chiang Rai Today we will get up early in the morning to go and explore the North of Thailand. We will begin today's adventure by taking a local bus to Thaton where we will then take a long-tail boat along the Mekok River. We will then go check into the hotel and relax a bit before exploring the Chiang Rai Night Market. (Day 13 B) Day 14: Explore the Golden Triangle & Myanmar (Burma) Today we are going to take a song teow to the Monkey Cave and then to the Thai border town of Measai. There we will have the opportunity to cross the border into the busy Burmese trading town of Thachilek for sightseeing and shopping. Next we will travel down to the Golden Triangle where the three countries--Laos, Myanmar (Burma), and Thailand meet on the longest river in Southeast Asia, the Mekong River. There you can see the beautiful view of both sides of the Mekong river. In the evening, we will celebrate the end of our adventure with a good-bye dinner together. (Day 14 B) Day 15: Return to Bangkok You have reached the end of your adventure as you fly back to Bangkok in the morning to catch your flight home. We hope that you have had a wonderful adventure and will return to Thailand again someday. (Day 15 B) |
