Getting in the Know

GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER...
One of America's renowned Black educators and agriculturalists. He was born a slave. And he lived from 1864 to 1943.

Dr. Carver was instrumental in raising the southern agricultual plight--due to drought and exessive over-farming--towards a more hopeful and manageable recovery of an over-worked, depleted soil. He did so by introducing a variety of different "growable" produces into the South...and discovering by-products that allowed for an "attractive," ready market of these produces.

One of our former presidents--and his family--was able to benefit from the "industry" of Dr. Carver. Can you recall the Present from Plains, Georgia who had once owned a peanut farm?

Along with introduing peanuts and sweet potatoes the the South, Dr. Carver "introduced" the concept of "crop rotation."

Dr. Carver was an equally "industrious" educator; and Tuskegee Institute claims him as their "mentor." Yes, the long productive Dr. George Washington Carver was, in deed, a giant among men...and a man for all seasons.

SPECIAL NOTE:A short, insightful piece
on the life of Dr. Carver is maintained,
and can be located in Who's Who In America,
vol. 22
, (Years: 1942--1943).

ELDRICK TIGER WOODS...
The pride of the golfing world...and American's own sports protege.... He is born of multi-ethnic parantage in the year 1975.

Tiger, as with most proteges, acquired an early interest in his craft. Now, a consummate professional of extraordinary talent, Tiger first picked up a golf club at age nine months. Under the early tutelage of his father--himself a professional golfer, Tiger went on to dominate "junior" and "amateur" leagues golf.

Being awarded a scholarship by Standford University, Tiger showed himself to be an exceptional golfer. However, he remained at Standford for two years only, at which time, Tiger made the decision to turn professional.

For the waning interest in the sporting "green," Tiger was as a "star on the harizon." And America rejoiced! The P.G.A. and the "sports industry" had suddenly become reinvigorated...! And with his win of The Masters' (--in Augusta, GA.--1997), a new "all-time-high" record was achieved by this young American...Eldrick Tiger Woods.

SPECIAL NOTE: Unfortunately no entry
for Tiger Woods could be located in the
"up-dated" Who's Who. But a significant piece
on the young Tiger Woods is maintained,
in Current Biography Yearbook (1997)

MAYA MARGUERITE ANNIE ANGELOU...
America's renowned Black writer, poetress and educator. She is born in 1928. She is one of America's leading "Civil Rights" proponents. And her voice is a "voice" for peace, unity and cooperation.

Dr. Maya Angelou is an educator with global appreciation for "mutual respect" and understanding...towards all peoples and amongst all nations.... But her "beginnings" did not herald her life's present accomplishments.

At a young age, Miss Angelou experinced a traumatic ordeal that led her to seek refuge in "silence." She refused to utter a word...not one word. It was only after a friend of the family took a special interest in the youth--sharing her own world and the true meaning of books...of words--was Miss Angelou (--then, Marrerete Annie Johnson) encouraged to "speak."

And speak, she did!

The non speaking child evolved into a "Renaissance" womam.... The young Maya Angelou became a "civil Rights" activist. And Dr. Martin Luther King appointed her as "Northen Coordinator" of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. And amongst her credits are those of educator...writer...directress...actress, incumferencing the sphere of the classroom...and branching out to include screenplays and books...film...television.., to begin to list the hosts of affairs to her concern.

Miss Angelou was involved in the American Revolution Bicentennial, but her crowning moment came when she addressed the nation at President Clinton's inaugaral (1993) with the poem: "On The Pulse Of Morning"--a "voice" urging America to embrace unity...inclusivity... and tolerence.

Miss Angelou has "voiced" her message abroad in such places as Cairo, Egypt and the University of Ghana. This woman has also authored a number of autobiograpical works, her first being I know Why the Cage Bird Sings(1970).

Dr. Maya Marguerite Angelou, America's stalwart "voice" for taking up "again the American Dream", presently holds a professorship and speaks out on compelling issues to youthful minds on colledges and universities.

SPECIAL NOTE:In reference to Wo's Who:

unforturnately, two years after her inaugural
presentation for Presidend Clinton and
country. Earlier entries may be located in the
