My Fav Movies
THE GOONIES A truly entertaining film, which doesn't treat viewers like kids by toning down the swearing and violence. The characters in the movie are supposed to be kids, and that's exactly the way they are portrayed. It has everything- adventure, likeable characters, romance (for those of you who DON"T think it destroys a good adventure), booby traps and secret passages, treasure, etc, etc. The One.
A CHORUS LINE Though the music is nothing compared to the original Broadway version, the acting and singing is surprisingly skillful, considering the stars are more dancers than anything else. The script is also strong and thought-provoking, and the dancing is perfect. Amazing.
CLUE A LOT of plot-holes, which never occured to me as I watched this movie over and over as a kid. But now, it remains an energetic murder mystery, with cool characters and a HILARIOUSLY GREAT script.
GEORGIA An intense film about the relationship between two sisters- one, a famous and talented folk singer, and the other, a struggling musician living in her shadow. This movie also demonstrates the awesome voice of Academy Award-Nominated actress Mare Winningham.
RADIANCEFrom Australia, this independent film is a mixture of beautiful cinematography and visuals, heart-tugging music, and complex 3D characters. Though both Deborah Mailman and Trisha Morton-Thomas give outstanding performances, I was particularly intruiged by Rachael Maza, as Cressy, the sister who's singing ability allowed her to break away from rural life. The scene in which Cressy is mesmerised by the fire engulfing her house is, in itself, mesmerising.
GREASE What can I say? I watched this film 100 times when I was younger, without getting any of the jokes. Now I do, and they add even more life to this energetic musical, which infects me every time, and every generation seems to fall in love with it, despite it's 'classic' shelf-age.
THE LAST UNICORN My favourite fantasy film, this is a catalyst for my childhood memories, and the screen version of the book by Peter S. Beagle. The script is so heart-wrenchingly good that it is wasted on children, and deserves a more mature audience. The music is also very cool.
RETURN TO OZ Another favourite 80's fantasy, this sequel to 'The Wizard of Oz' is much darker and creepier, but inspires more realistic magic, and rejects the 'kiddie' feel.
SINCE YOU'VE BEEN GONE An awesome reunion movie from David Schwimmer, with hilarious characters and interesting plot. And a great song, by the way, sung by Joey Slotnick. Now if I can only find a copy of it...
PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK
Older Australian film by Peter Weir, this one is eerily spooky and solemn, with a fast and slow pace in all the right places. And a beautiful script.
WILLOW A solid and entertaining fantasy, and the characters are cool, even if the actors playing them are unappealing (well, most of them).
EXCALIBUR Epic fantasy which may bore those not interested in the history of King Arthur, Camelot, Merlin, etc...But it takes itself seriously, and gives itself credibility, in the midst of such fantastic plot and characters.
BOYS ON THE SIDE Great performances, especially Whoopi Goldberg and Mary Louise Parker, with beautiful and memorable moments, and a clever, witty and sometimes sad script. Wonderful quotes, and great music.
BLADE RUNNER Haunting 80's sci-fi/fantasy, with curious characters and an overall melancholic, desperate feel. Not much dialogue, but it's few beautiful words say so much more.
ROMY & MICHELE'S HIGH SCHOOL REUNION
Crazy, funny film with Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino spot-on in their roles. A hilarious dialogue, with some deeper moments within, and some memorable scenes, especially the Reunion dance.
LABYRINTH A magical fantasy, which doesn't take itself too seriously (eg. David Bowie in tights and a mutated mullet). Great puppetry and music, and the script isn't bad either. The kind of film that makes you wish you were 'in' the movie, rather than just watching it.
DARK CRYSTAL Nice 80's film, again with puppetry, but serious and solemn. Beautiful backgrounds and artwork, and some clever and reflective words thrown into the dialogue.
LAST NIGHT Amazing film from Don Mckellar, describing the events of a group of individuals as they experience their last day on earth. Great characters, who react to their forthcoming death with relaxed acceptance, are a refreshing change from the gun-toting supermen out to save the earth from Armaegeddon (eg. Bruce Willis). And a great soundtrack, too.
THE NEVERENDING STORY A classic fantasy of the 80's, and probably the only one that ALL kids of this generation will remember. It is beautiful to watch, the music is great, and it tugs at a yearning inside everyone who watches it (at least I think so :)
THE CARE BEARS MOVIE 2 Haven't seent his movie for a LONG time, and can't find it ANYWHERE! Nevertheless, I remember it being much better than the first. And it's care bears, man. Come on.
DONNIE DARKO Must-see sci-fi/fantasy film with a great script and great performances, even if it is a little confusing :)
STRANGERS WITH CANDY I know this isn't a movie, but this TV series was so hiLArious that it deserves a mention. Amy Sedaris is the most talented woman alive, and deserves more recognition than she gets.
