THE MAGDALENE SISTERS (Peter Mullan, 2002, UK, Ireland)

THE MAN ON THE TRAIN (Patrice Leconte, 2002, France)

THE MAN WITHOUT A PAST (Aki Kaurismaki, 2002, Finland)
If someone would make this movie in the US, the reviews would have been awful. Because, let's be honest, the jokes are really old and they're not very funny. Of course, these movies are not made in the US and, still, it's an acceptable film.

MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD (Peter Weir, 2003, USA)
A pleasant surprise. I thought it was going to be just a movie about boring battles, but I was wrong. Points extra for the excellent art direction and for making you feel you're actually in those ships.

MATCHSTICK MEN (Ridley Scott, 2003, USA)
I knew the ending before watching it (no, not because I'm smart, because my friends are dumber) so I couldn't enjoy it much. Still, a good stylish movie. Comparing this movie with Ridley Scott's previous works, Matchstick Men tells you that his career is not over yet.

THE MATRIX RELOADED (The Wachovski Bros., 2003, USA)
The first installment is a sci-fi classic. The second one is far from being one. Even though some fight sequences are exaggeratedly long, the movie is acceptable.

THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS (The Wachovski Bros., 2003, USA)
A major disappointment considering that The Matrix could have been, easily, the trilogy of this new century. The question here is: do we actually needed two installments where everything could have been said and shown in one?

MONDAYS IN THE SUN (Fernando Leon de Aranoa, 2002, Spain)

MONSTER (Patty Jenkins, 2003, USA)
Wait a minute, I think I saw this film before. Oh, yes! It was called Boys Don't Cry and it was a million times better.

MY LIFE WITHOUT ME (Isabel Coixet, 2003, Canada, Spain)
A really sad and depressing film that actually leaves you happy and optimist. Go figure.

MYSTIC RIVER (Clint Eastwood, 2003, USA)
What differs Mystic River from Eastwood's previous forgettable work Blood Work is a tiny but very important thing: the relevance of the characters. Because Mystic River, as a thriller, it is completely predictable, but it is really effective as a drama. Because all the characters are important; they feel real because they are no heroes and they are interesting because the movie is a very good study of human psychology.

NORTHFORK (Michael Polish, 2003, USA)
There are two movies in here: the one about the town is the good one, the one about the sick kid is not.

NOWHERE IN AFRICA (Caroline Link, 2002, Germany)
Not your typical World War II movie, and not your typical Africa movie; it's just an excellent film that mixes both themes.

PETER PAN (PJ Hogan, 2003, USA)

PHONE BOOTH (Joel Schumacher, 2003, USA)
Having some entertaining and good TV series like C.S.I., Alias, Law & Order and the intriguing 24, movies like Phone Booth are becoming obsolete. Because why would pay a ticket to watch this picture when you have tons of better fictions in TV and for free?

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL (Gore Venbinski, 2003, USA)

The Magdalene Sisters
The Man on the Train
Mondays in the Sun
Monster
My Life Without Me
Northfork
Nowhere in Africa
Peter Pan
Pirates of the Caribbeans
