At the bauhaus, there were various different workshops such as architecture, ceramics, joinery and fitting and so on. Architecture: this department was founded in 1920 by Adolf Meyer, which also the very same year that the Bauhaus was offered a plot of land. Walter Gropius intended to build on this land so he gave the new architecture apprentices the opportunity to help in the design. Joinery and Fitting: Johannes Itten was appointed director of this workshop when it was founded in 1921. A workshops was build solely for these classes. Before the students could become apprentices in one area in the Bauhaus, they would have to undertake a preliminary course. Ceramics: Gerhardt Marks was appointed the director of this workshop when it was first opened. The workshop was originally situated in the Weimar Kiln Factory under management of Joost Schmidt. The two men worked alongside and proved very influential to the ceramics department. Printing and Advertising: This workshop wasn't created until the move to Dessau in 1925. Herbert Bayer became the first director of the workshop. His intentions were to create a "production workshop". When Ludwig Mies van der Rohe took over the Bauhaus the printing and advertising workshop became less popular.
