Tom Reclaims Challenge Title
Tom capitalized on his Low Handicap status by capturing the 2000 Challenge. On a day when over half of the field was in position to win late in the round, Tom's execution and good fortune paid off by returning him to the winners' circle after a three year drought. The field was so tight that two thirds of the field posted scores that would have won the 1999 Challenge.
Tom and Richard both tore up the outward nine by posting 32 and 31 respectively, but it's a whole different game on the inward nine at Tree Links. Things got interesting quickly with Tom floating his drive wide right and OB into the driving range on 10 while Richard made net birdie. The on-course reported became exhausted for several holes at this point and the details are very fuzzy.
The story picks up again with Tom firing three drives into the woods on 17. The Golf Gods must have smiled on Tommy that day, for he found is first ball and scrambled to a five. The rest is history. Final scores are below.
| As with many CMGC events, there were some interesting side notes. Chief among them are a couple of new Club Records. The first to fall was John's 6 year old record for most strokes on a hole. John held the record at 18 since his famous 1994 round at Timberview. Not any more. Scott K. put not one, not two, but five drives into the driving range right of #10. His sixth drive flew into deep poison ivy flanking the left side. After finding the fairway on his 15th stroke, Scott went on to make a solid new club record 19. Congratulations! |
Scott K. dethroned himself en route to another new Club Record for most strokes with a driver in a round. After setting the record at 29 in the 2000 Lobsterfest, Scott pushed the mark to 34 at the Challenge. Another congratulations!
In a final interesting note, Richard would have won his second consecutive tournament were it not for the USGA Section 10.3 correction applied to his handicap index. It never ceases to amaze me how level the USGA Handicap System has made our playing field. It makes me proud to be an American.
