Profile: Mark Goodier: Mark was born in Salisbury, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in 1961. He moved to Scotland with his family running a mobile disco for some years until he got his break on his local Scottish radio station Radio Forth in 1980. Five other local stations were then the home of Mark up until Christmas of 1987 when the move down to London and Radio 1 took place.
His first stint was on the late night show, but his talent led him to present a number of daytime shows from 1988 to 1989, including Weekend Breakfast, Weekday Breakfast, Drivetime, and even worked for Pete Tong in 1990 when he helped out on the 'Evening Session'.
There was also a three month spot on the Breakfast Show from October 1993 - this was followed by the mid-afternoon show in 1994, and 'Drivetime' from 1995 until the New Year of 1997.
Mark set up 'Wise Buddah', a
programme production company, but April 2002 saw the company go into liquidation
leaving Mark to lay off over 30 of his workforce.
Whereabouts: Radio 1 has evolved
to the stage where presenters such as Mark now find themselves in a similar
position to the likes of Simon Bates & DLT under Matthew
Bannister.
During 2002, Mark has filled in for Jimmy Young and
Richard Allinson. Mark is best known for presenting the Radio 1 Top 40
Sunday Chart Show, which he started in 1994 following Bruno
Brookes. His voice also appears to announce the Top 10 on BBC1
TV weekly Top of the Pops chart
show.
In August 2002, the BBC stated that Mark would be leaving Radio 1 in December after 15 years and that there will be a "new look chart and presenter who is yet to be confirmed". In an interview, Mark said that he'd had "a great time at Radio 1 but felt that his 15-year anniversary was a good time to move on" He also said that he would like to present a show on BBC Radio 2.
Mark Goodier has joined Classic FM. He said: "It's important to be broad and eclectic and I always have been at the BBC - this will push the boundaries of what people can expect from me a little
further.....it's very important to have a challenge and I don't want to always be known as the guy who did the
Radio 1 chart and only the Radio 1 chart."
His first show for Classic FM was on January 5th 2003, presenting the 'Classic Countdown' chart show for the station.
He spent the day and week before the move filling in during the afternoon on BBC
Radio 2.
Mark follows former Radio 1 DJ.'s Simon
Bates, Mike Read and Paul Gambaccini
who have all moved to Classic-FM previously.
His last Radio 1 chart show was broadcast on Sunday 17th November 2002, the show celebrating 50 years of the Official Chart, and included Robbie Williams playing live. Mark finished by thanking his support staff and playing a special jingle, which it was believed had not previously been used.
As the chart hit 50, Radio
1 hired a comparative unknown ex-mid morning Galaxy Newcastle presenter
Wes Butters, to succeed Mark
Goodier as the presenter of the Sunday afternoon chart show from February
9th 2003.
But the 'hairs' have been split again as the ghost of the Radio
1 Chart Show returned to haunt them. EMAP have signed up Mark
Goodier to present it's 'Smash Hits'
Chart Show, putting him back up against Neil and new Radio
1 recruit Wes Butters. EMAP
previously broadcast the Pepsi Chart, but with the ever expanding request
records from TV services of the
EMAP empire, (music channels 'The Box' &
'Smash Hits', and now 'The Hits') and using MRIB sales data and radio airplay,
they've taken the step to launch a third Chart show, which commenced January 5th
2003 from 4pm - 7pm, hosted by Mark
Goodier -
totally level with the other Chart shows and aired on
EMAP, Forever Broadcasting & Tindle Radio Group stations.
