Where we work

The House of Poor works in Togo, mainly in the south of the country but our ambition is to cover the whole country.Togo is a debt-ridden and a very poor country of West Africa.

From 1993 to 2005, the European Union which is the first financial backer of the country had suspended its cooperation due to lack of democracy. The defection of EU had led to the defection of major financial institutions like IMF and World Bank.Only a few countries continued to aid Togo. The government of Togo had hard time facing its commitments like paying the salary of civil servants, constructions of roads, schools, hospitals and assisting poor families.

In January 1994, Franc CFA which is the currency of Togo and also shared by other 13 countries of West and Central Africa, had been devalued 50% under the pressure of IMF and the World Bank. The prices of imported products doubled overnight. All the countries using Franc CFA benefited from assistance measures to alleviate the consequences of the devaluation except Togo. Why?The country was under embargo. The consequences of the devaluation remains to date.

During that period 1993 to 2005, the number of poor had dramatically increased.Even though, the European Union had resumed its cooperation with Togo in 2005, no improvement of the situation had been observed. As most of our partners hesitate to jump on the band wagon of EU.

According to the World Bank, in 2004, the demographic growth of Togo was 3% higher than the growth rate 2.7%.The needs are higher than the resourses.According to the same sources, life expectancy is 50 years and the teaching to read and write rate is 58%.

According to UNDP, the index of human developement of Togo is 0.512; Togo is rated 152rd over 177.At least 80% of the population live with less than US$1/day.

In view of the worrying above facts, no need to tell you that we need your help to bring poverty down.Act now, do not hesitate.Your hesitation will prolong the suffering of poor.Click Here to donate.
