I started drawing in chalk on the driveway outside my apartment in
the summer of 2000. I enjoyed doing it, I enjoyed the results and I loved
to hear the comments as people go by. It was a way I could give something
back to the community. If I made a person smile or invited a child to help
me draw, it really made my day. Many people stopped by to tell me how much
they loved to see my work, to be surprised and pleased by the variety
of my drawings. I wished I could always have such a place in the heart of
the village, but I lost all that the same month that the Syracuse Post-Standard
ran a story on my drawings (March 2003). Now I live more or less in exile
in Sherwood, drawing on a small slate walk that only very few see.
I really get into my chalk drawings. Here are some photos taken by Julian Burroughs. I had never seen myself at work and these were eye-openers.
