"LET'S
BE THE BAND THAT LOVES ITS MUSIC AND THE
PEOPLE THAT ARE ATTRACTED TO ITS MUSIC.
AND EVEN THE ONES THAT AREN'T, MAYBE, AS
WELL."

SPOTLIGHT |
|
With this
effort, U2 has recorded
its most satisfying album
since 1991's Achtung,
Baby. After diverging
into experiments with
both sonics (Zooropa) and
cultural irony (Pop and
its campy PopMart tour),
the Irish four-piece has
returned -- a little
wiser, a little kinder
and gentler -- to its
strengths: less-is-more
production, subtle hooks,
and sweeping statements
bathed with idealism.
Although devoted fans
will welcome this
straight-down-the-middle
approach with open arms,
those on the fringes who
were intrigued by their
tinkering will find it
lacks some of the
vibrancy of their recent
artistic adventurousness.
Clearly, their mood has
perked up, and it's
infectious. REVIEW. Why it's
more important to be
sincere again. Further
notes from John Bitzer,
CDNOW Editorial Director.
