"There are numerous stories of Wheatens nearly bowling over their owners (as well as the ring observers--with laughter) coming back on the recall. Wheatens are always overzealous when reunited with their own best friends -- for to leave a Wheaten alone for even a few moments warrants a welcome fit for a hero returning home after months at war!" -- Joy K Layton, AKC Gazette, March 1982.
Reggie is a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier and is 12 years old. He has a soft silky coat that is the color of ripened wheat, they have no under coat so they do not shed. He is 19 inches at the withers and weighs 48 pounds. Wheaten Terrier breed comes from Ireland where they use them for herding dogs, hunting dogs and guard dogs. The Wheaten has a compact well-knit body expressive of agility, strength and power. They display courage and power, can be gentle or jovial. Wheatens are intelligent, discriminating and charming. They have a built in appeal for everyone, with special qualifications for each. Men appreciate them as a dog unspoiled and ready for work, while women are attracted by their beauty and gentle spirit, and children can’t wait to try out their eager puppy spirits. The Wheaten is happy-go-lucky and always adaptable as a companion of the elderly or romping with the children. They are patient and tolerant at all times.
Reggie is our third Wheaten terrier and they have all had the same temperament and happy-go-lucky spirit. The Wheaten Terriers are a delightful breed to have as a companion pet. We have enjoyed every moment that they have given us over the years and we cannot remember a moment that they didn’t leave a smile on our face. Reggie and I have been a member of the Mini-Cassia Therapy team for one and a half years. Reggie knows that when I place the scarf on his neck that he is going to work. He immediately becomes very excited and is eagerly waiting to get into the car. He has learned how to snuggle up to a wheel chair and sit in just the right spot so that the individual can reach him with a gentle pat or scratch behind the ears. He will eagerly go to a chair and places his head on the individual’s leg and enjoys all the attention that is given to him.
Reggie and I do seven visits a month and I have found that participation in the Mini Cassia Therapy Pet Group is the most rewarding experience that I have ever had.
