Generation II
3.  John Henry Laughlin
(John1 Laughlin)
He was born in NY, NY  on August 24, 1836.  He removed to Allamakee Co. IA with his parents in 1849.

He married Mary
Douglas on March 14, 1860 in Allamakee Co. IA. She was born in 1842 in Scotland.

John had a "brush with death" in 1878 when he was taking the children to church.  His team became frightened and John  fell, or was thrown violently to the ground upon some rocks, cutting his head.  He was laid up for several days. None of the children were injured.

The family was beset with tragedy.  Their second-born son Charles died at age 18 mo. in 1865 &  in 1883, just a month before Mary died  of consumption at age 41,  their 7 yr. old son Frank died of a skull fracture, suffered in a fall.  At the time of Mary's death the Postville
Review reported:  Only a short time ago they lost a child and now the mother is taken. The youngest child is now sick "nigh unto death."   I believe that this child was daughter Abbie, and that she recovered and lived a long life.  John was also very ill at this time.

Three years after Mary died, John was married to Miss Elizabeth 'Lizzie'
Murray in Postville. Lizzie was born in PA on May 14, 1855.   Her parents were of Irish descent.   They lived the remainder of their lives in Postville.

Mary Douglas die May 2, 1883. Elizabeth Murray died on August 16, 1923.  John H. Laughlin died on December 22, 1916.  Joh was buried next to Mary & his young children in Minert cemetery.  Elizabeth was laid to rest in the Murray family plot in the Frankville, Winneshiek Co. IA cemetery.

John H. Laughlin & Mary Douglas had 9 children:
(John1 Laughlin)
4.  Robert R. Laughlin
He was born in Michigan on February 25, 1840.

He was married to Jane
Dobson in about 1861.   Jane was born in IN in 1842.  Her parents were from Virginia.

Robert received his appointment as a United Brethern minister in Fayette, Iowa in 1878.   They moved around Iowa  throughout their marriage, spreading the Word of God.  In 1880 he was holding nightly  revival meeting in Clear Lake, Iowa.  By 1883 they were living in Toledo, Tama Co. Iowa.  and in 1891 they were residing in Cedar Rapids.

Andrew served in the Civil War and was wounded in action in 1864. [More about his war years can be found on the Patterson family  pages]

In November of  1872 Andrew and Mary Jane moved to Guthrie county, where Andrew's older brother had a farm.  He was a farmer & a preacher at the United Brethren Congregation at Glendon.  He served as county coroner for a time.  They sold the farm in 1881 and moved into the town of Guthrie Center.  In 1889 they left Guthrie Center and removed to Des Moines.

Mary died May 25, 1911 in Des Moines, Polk Co. IA, at 69 years of age.  Andrew died February 24,1931 in Des Moines, Polk Co. IA, at 90 years of age. They are buried in the Des Moines Woodland (or Woodlawn) Cemetery.

7.  James Riddle Laughlin
He was born in Post twp, Allamakee Co.  IA on September 25,1851.

He married
Amanda Jane Harris in Castalia, Winneshiek Co. IA on May 4,1872.  Amanda was born in Bloom Twp.Morgan Co, OH December 23,1849. She was the daughter of Elisha Harris and Margaret Jane Patterson.
The wedding was a 'double', the other couple being his sister Sarah who married her brother George W. Harris.

They farmed the Laughlin homestead in Post Twp. Allamakee Co. IA.  Jim attended college and taught school for a time.  He was Post twp. assessor, was an officer in the IA National Guard and helped build the first rural telephone lines in the area. He served as superintendent of the Bethel Sunday School in 1880 and was active in local Republican politics throughout his life.

The barn on their farm burned down in 1884, and he suffered the loss of the building and much machinery, but Jim was insured through Farmers Mutual Ins.   That same year he shot a bald eagle with a 7 ft. wing-span.

One of the high-lights of his life must have been going to the Worlds Fair in Chicago in 1893.  He traveled with several of his good friends on a fast train, called the "CANNON BALL"

In 1909 he served on the Grand Jury in Dubuque.

James died March 23, 1930 Postville, IA  at 78 years of age.  Amanda died June 17,1938   at 88 years of age.  They are buried at the Minert cemetery.

8.  Sarah Ellen Laughlin
She was born in a log house in Post twp., Allamakee Co. IA on December 14,1855.  She was known as "Sarie" or "Ella".

She married
George Wesley Harris   in Castalia, Iowa, May 4, 1872.  George was born in McConnelsville, Morgan Co. Bloom twp. OH December 22,1851. He was the son of Elisha Harris and Margaret Jane Patterson
It was a double wedding, her brother James married George's sister Amanda, at the same ceremony.

The farm on which Sarah was born adjoined the farm she and her husband owned and lived their lives.

Ella was remembered as a loving, kind and fun woman by her children & grandchildren.  Tragedy struck in 1898 when her young son Roger was accidently shot in a hunting mishap and Ella withdrew.  Her daughter Nina reminsced to her own daughter Florence "Mother never was the same after Roger died, I guess none of us really were, but mother took it the worst of all."

Ella  listed herself the mother of only 5 children on both the 1900 & 1910 census.....perhaps this gives some insight into the terrible grief she bore after  Roger died so tragically.  She may have sunk into a deep depression, her health failing.

Sarah died December 13,1914 in Allamakee County, IA  at 58 years of age. George died July 31, 1935 in Postville, Allamakee Co. IA at 83 years of age.  They are buried in Minert cemetery.
