2. John William Patterson |
(WilliamHenry1) |
He was born in Morgan Co.OH September 5,1826. He married Caroline E. Patton in Muskigum Co. OH on October 9,1849. Caroline was born on October 22, 1828. They are found living next to his parents in Bloom twp. Morgan Co. OH in 1850. John was working as a saltmaker. They removed to Allamakee Co. Iowa in 1854, likely traveling with the Elisha Harris family. The History of Winneshiek & Allamakee Counties, Iowa, 1882: "J. W. Patterson, P.O. Postville; farmer, sec. 21; owns 285 acres of land, valued at $35 per acre; was born in Morgan county, Ohio, in 1826, where he remained till the spring of 1854, when he came to this county, locating on his present farm, it then being raw land, with no markets nearer than the Mississippi River......" He was active in the local Republican party, serving as a delegate to conventions several times over the years. The Postville Review frequently reported on J.W.'s farming talents; in 1878 he showed off a 5 ft. 7 in. stalk of spring wheat and in 1882 a 16 lb. cabbage. Cora Patterson Stevens writes of Caroline: "She was a milliner and was noted for her fine appearance and good housekeeping." and of their move from Allamakee Co.: "They sold the farm March 7, 1883 to Henry W. Meier and moved to Cherokee Co. north of Pierson, IA" Although Cora had the basic facts correct, her dates are in error. The Postville newspaper reported on the farm sale in November of 1887 and the move to Cherokee Co. in spring of 1888. In April of 1888 J.W. wrote to the paper back home about his new farm. [read letter] He continued to write letters back to the Postville paper on a regular basis throughout the years. In 1893 he and Caroline traveled to Zanesville, OH to visit relatives for an extended time. Caroline died August 17, 1902 in Cherokee, IA at 73 years of age. John died May 30, 1913 in Pierson, Woodbury Co., IA, at 86 years of age. They are buried in Grand Meadow cemetery, Cherokee, IA. John William Patterson and Caroline E. Patton had 5 children: |

Their many friends hope that they may both recover and live long to enjoy the ample property that they have worked so hard to accumulate." It was not to be. In 1856 James Patterson bought land from John & Rachel Lyons of Allamakee Co. IA and in 1857 they sold two parcels of land to Anthony Barret and Mitchel Sheriden. 8. Andrew Jackson Patterson |
He was born in Morgan Co. OH June 17,1840. As a young man he removed with his family to Post Twp, Allamakee Co. IA. He married twice. He married Mary Jane Laughlin in Hardin, Allamakee Co. IA, February 18, 1859. Mary was born in Ft. Wayne, IN November 11,1841. She was the daughter of John Laughlin and Jane Cuttle. Andrew enlisted on August 14, 1862 and served in the Civil War in Company A of the 27th Iowa Infantry. He was promoted to Fourth Corporal on May 29, 1863. In 1864 he was wounded in action at Pleasant Hill, LA. He was promoted to Second Corporal July 25, 1864 and to First Corporal Oct. 15, 1864. He was wounded again on December 16, 1864 in Nashville, TN. He was mustered out August 8, 1865 in Clinton, IA. The effects of the gun shot wound to his left thigh would last through his life. On December 12, 1868 he filed for a Civil War pension. Andrew and Mary Jane moved to Guthrie Co. IA in 1872, where Andrew's older brother had a farm. Andrew was the county coroner for a time as well as the minister to a local congregation, the United Brethren Congregation at Glendon In 1881 the Pattersons gave up farming and moved into the town of Guthrie Center. In 1889 they moved to Des Moines, Iowa. In 1900 they were living at 3124 Fifth Street in Des Moines. In 1915 Andrew Patterson filed a Civil War pension paperwork as a resident of Pierson, Woodbury Co. IA. He listed his second wife as born Sarah Buntly and that they were married 09 Apr, 1914 at Pierson, Iowa. [Note: this is in conflict with the information on his first pension, where Mary is listed as a widow in 1905. It is also possible that my interpretation of the pension is incorrect.] His second wife was Sarah Buntly, and they married in Pierson, IA on April 9, 1914. Mary J. Laughlin Patterson died May 25, 1911 in Des Moines, Polk Co. IA, at 69 years of age. She is buried in the Woodlawn cemetery, Des Moines, IA. Andrew J. Patterson died on February 24,1931 in Des Moines, Polk Co. IA, at 90 years of age. He is also buried in Woodland cemetery. Note: The family history written by Andrew J. Patterson's daughter Cora gives a lengthly and incredibly detailed accounting of his life as a husband, father, Civil War soldier and pioneer. She does not mention a second marriage for Andrew. Andrew Jackson Patterson and Mary Jane Laughlin had 4 children: |
