Allied Order of Battle Japanese Order of Battle |
Morale All Japanese units are Elite. All American units are Rookie.
Terrain and Setup The map should describe a pleasant coastal area, with approximately 1/3 of the table being taken up by water (As this ia a night scenario, a darker blue or black backing might be more appropriate than the usual light sea blue). Divide the table in half perpendicular to the waterline. A frontage road should loosely follow the beach along the full length of the map. Inland, the map should rise several gradual degrees of elevation. Scattered trees may be placed as the players see fit. On the American half of the waterline, construct a fenced-in installation bordering the far American edge of the table. This installation should contain a large circular fuel tank, several small buildings, and several sandbagged infantry installations flanking the road as it passes the installation. Place a dock approximately 3 MU long on the waterline, jutting out into the sea. Moored alongside this dock are four PBY Catalina flying boats, which can be represented with paper templates or models, as the players prefer. Flanking the point where the dock meets the beach should be a .50 Caliber Machinegun Installation. Japanese forces may set up anywhere on the Japanese side of the table within 5 MU of the halfway point. American forces may be set up anywhere inside the installation, though up to two units may be placed on patrol anywhere else on the American side of the board. |
The Americans have prepared a contingency plan called "Case Blue," coordinating the dispersal of American air assets in the event of a major Japanese threat to the Hawaiian islands. The Americans are still shocked by the sheer number of planes lost in the Pearl Harbor raid- at last count, almost 350. "Case Blue" has been activated.
Scattered around the Hawaiian coast are several small refueling stations, each one capable of sustaining half a dozen of the Navy's valuable PBY Catalina flying boats. The Catalina wing has been dispersed to these stations under heavy guard. The second Japanese objective is to destroy one of these stations, which juts out into the Pacific at Kaena Point. Demolishing its complement of flying boats is a very practical move as far as the naval planners of the raid are concerned- doing so greatly increases the chances that the three submarines involved will be able to withdraw from American waters unmolested.
This scenario is Medium Mission Priority for both sides.
The Japanese objectives are to destroy the large fuel tank at the Kaena Point installation and to sink every PBY Catalina moored at the dock for the night. The fuel tank and the PBYs are to be destroyed by fire from the assigned forces, as a landing boat mishap dumped the demolition charges meant for this mission into the dark Hawaiian surf.
The American objective is to prevent the destruction of the fuel tank and the Catalinas, and to delay the Japanese while reinforcements are summoned. If the Japanese have not destroyed the fuel tank and all the Catalinas by the end of Turn 10, complications will arise in future engagements.
The fuel tank is a Stationary target of Size 16. It has an armor rating of 10/20/30. Any Japanese attack that would cause Light damage to the tank has a 50% chance (1-3 on 1d6) of setting off the aviation gasoline within. Any Japanese attack that would cause Heavy damage or greater automatically sets off the fuel tank.
When the fuel tank explodes, any unit in its MU is automatically destroyed. Any unit in an adjacent MU suffers a x11 attack at a random Degree of Success (roll 1d6 and multiply by 11). Any unit that survives this will suffer a similar attack the next round at x7, as burning aviation gasoline covers everything in a wide radius. The fuel tank and all adjacent MUs will continue to burn as fires with an Intensity of 16, but will neither go out nor spread before the end of the scenario.
Each Catalina is a Stationary target of Size 12. Each has an armor rating of 5/10/15. Catalinas may be destroyed by the accumulation of five Light Damage results, three Heavy Damage results, or a single damage result of 15 or greater.
If the Japanese were successfully delayed during the attack on the Schofield armory, add the following to the American forces assigned to this mission:
If the Japanese have not destroyed the fuel tank and the Catalinas by the end of Turn 10, they have been delayed once again.
