Go to any of the following links to find some great places for families to stay in Tasmania. At the moment they are in order of the way we went on our recent holiday, that is, from north to south down the east coast and back through the centre to the north again. The gold stars give an indication of how each place suited us.

O'Hara's
Resort Hotel
a top rated resort in Launceston. We were in a 3 bedroom villa and there was certainly plenty of room for the six of us. There was only one bathroom which caused a bit of a problem with showers, etc.
The lounge and dining area were huge (for a holiday villa) and the lounge chairs were very comfortable. The kitchen was big but not many cooking utensils were provided (there was no wooden spoon!) and there was no microwave which would have been handy. There was a washing machine and dryer in the villa which was a big plus. The resort has a big indoor swimming pool (13 metres long), a spa, tennis court and games room. There are no onsite barbecues, but there are two restaurants on site. This is one of the more expensive places we stayed in, however, it was very comfortable and breakfast was included in the price. The resort is situated on a golf course in a residential area of Launceston, just down the road (walking distance) from the Country Club Casino and a short drive to the centre of Launceston. There is a small shopping centre nearby which was good for food shopping.
Iluka Holiday Centre
Your complete holiday location at Coles Bay on the Freycinet Peninsular on the east coast of Tasmania. Has something for everyone. This is a wonderful little place! Iluka Holiday Centre is a combination of chalets (old & new), caravan park and back packer hostel. We had a new 2 bedroom chalet. It was not luxurious but it was clean, spacious, very comfortable and nicely furnished.
The kitchen was reasonably well appointed and included a microwave oven. Just near our chalet was a sheltered area with a gas barbecue which we used to cook our evening meal on both nights of our stay. There is a general store, bakery and tavern in front of the holiday centre, and there is also another general store and post office a short distance away, so it was easy to find all the groceries we needed. The holiday centre is across the road from the beach. The water of the bay was a very deep blue and presented a magnificent sight. Our eldest son was impressed with the fishing both from the jetty and from the beach. On both days he caught flathead, salmon, and wrass, and even a large stingray which fortunately got away just as he had it a few feet from the shore. While staying here we also went into the Freycinet National Park and walked to the lookout over Wineglass Bay.The views were beautiful but the walk, although not difficult, is reasonably steep, and coming down is a bit slippery due to the surface of small stones.
Bicheno
Holiday Village
a family oriented resort on the east coast of Tasmania. There are about 20 villas of different sizes in a bush setting.
We were in one of the largest villas. It was 2 storeys, with 4 bedrooms (11 beds), one bathroom and 2 toilets. We also had a washing machine in our villa. The kitchen was a bit small but we did manage to cook meals for all of us (we had our family all together for Christmas, so now there were seven of us). There was a tennis court next to our villa, and the resort also has a games room, a swimming pool, a childrens playground and a canoe lake (the lake is very small).
Riverside Villas
one 4 star cottage and one 5 star cottage at Orford on the east coast. Looks good! (and is). We stayed in the 4 star cottage (the other one is designed for two people). We had two good sized bedrooms and the sofa in the lounge area opened out to become an extra bed. Once again there was only one bathroom.
A feature of these cottages is the spa bath which may be good for some, however, as the shower is over the bath, it would not be suitable for disabled people and we even found it awkward climbing (the sides are quite high) in and out of it. If there was a separate shower it would suit everyone . Apart from this small problem the place was great! There was plenty of room for all of us (back to six again). As well as the good sized and well equipped kitchen, the lounge and dining area was comfortable, and there was an extra sunroom, and a balcony overlooking the river. On our first day here our son caught a few good sized bream from the jetty in front of our cottage. However on the second day there were no fish, probably due to the heavy rain the day we arrived. Each night we were here we put some pieces of apple and carrot on the balcony and were pleased to see a possum come down out of the trees to eat. We were able to stand in the doorway watching it without it running away. This was definitely a good place to stay.
Port
Arthur Holiday World
family accomodation at the gateway
to Port Arthur Historical Site,
one of the main attractions in Tasmania. We didn't get off to a very good start here as our villa was not ready for us to move into until 3pm, even though the advertising all said occupancy would be available from 1pm. The villas (about twenty of them) are in very pleasant bushy parkland with enough space between them for privacy. Our villa had 3 bedrooms so we had plenty of room. The living area was OK but the kitchen had only a fridge without a freezer. It was a good thing we had not done our food shopping while we were waiting to get in, as we probably would have bought something frozen and would have been caught out! As it was it was just annoying that we were unable to re-freeze the cold blocks for our esky. These villas also had a balcony across the front from which we could see the bay, and in the early evening some pottoroos (small marsupials) came out to eat the grass in front of our villa.
Cascade Hotel a hotel in South Hobart which offers self contained family accommodation. The best thing about this hotel for us was its closeness to the centre of Hobart and to our daughter's home. The unit we were in was really only big enough for four people. It had two bedrooms and we had a folding bed which we put up in the small lounge area at night for our youngest son.
Russell Falls Holiday Cottages.
There's no proper link to them on the web.
They are certainly in a great location next to the entry to Mt Field National Park We were pleasantly surprised. There are only four cottages, which are not new and the furniture is fairly basic, but we were very comfortable. We had two good bedrooms and the living area was quite large. This is another place where the wild animals are plentiful. In the evening we had pottoroos, wallabies, paddemelons and a possum on the lawn outside our cottage. There is a small river next to the cottages which is popular with fly fishermen as there are plenty of trout. Our eldest son caught his first brown trout here on his new fly rod!
Derwent Bridge in central Tasmania great self contained chalets near Lake St Clair. I have not given this place our family rating as, due to a mix up with our booking (we had a receipt for the deposit), we were unable to stay in the chalet we had originally booked, which was a spacious one with three bedrooms (Olympus). We ended up spending our first night in the area in backpacker accommodation (nothing else was available) and our second night in one of the smaller chalets (Rufus) which was a bit cramped but a lot better than the first night. The pictures on their website give a good description of the chalets and if you decide to stay there you will definitely have a relaxing and comfortable holiday - but check your booking before you get there!
Grindelwald
a top rated family resort in the Tamar Valley just north of Launceston.
This is a magnificent resort of the same quality as O'Haras. We were in a two storey villa with the main bedroom downstairs and two bedrooms upstairs. The living area was quite good, but one strange thing, it only had a breakfast bar, no table and chairs! The resort itself is huge. There is a small shopping village, a golf course and pro shop, a tennis court, swimming pool/spa/sauna, games room, gymnasium, and a restaurant all within the grounds.
