Shell Beach

Second Day of North Trip
1st July 1996

On our way to Carnavon, the bus made a detour to Shell Beach around 2.35pm.
It was scorching hot and the daylight was glaring, when we got down from the bus.

This beach, however is really amazing! The beach stretches about 60km long. What you can find here is not a single grain of sand, but billions of tiny white 'coquina bivalve' sea shells. These shell deposits on the beach go down to about 10 metres deep. As for the sea water, it gets more and more salty as the years go by.

Visitors can reach Shell Beach by taking the Denham Hamelin Road.
Also note that some of the buildings in Denham are made from blocks of these compacted shells.
