THROTTLERS
ROD & CUSTOM CLUB
HISTORY |
HISTORY OF THROTTLERS ROD & CUSTOM CLUB INC.Terry Crosbie (ex. Wangaratta Rod & Custom Club) had been muttering about the idea of forming a Hot Rod club in the Cranbourne area for quite some time and while visiting Peter Leontini (ex. Melbourne Rodders), the subject was again talked about. The time had come and it was agreed that we should spread the word and see what sort of a result we would get. There were quite a few rodders in the Cranbourne area not involved in clubs or who had left clubs due to distance etc. The word was put around that on the 29th. March 1992, there was to be a BBQ at the scenic Arthers Seat, above the village of Dromana, about a 35-minute drive from Cranbourne, on the Mornington Peninsula There were five Rodders and their families that rolled up, some meeting for the first time. They were Terry Crosbie ('29 Chev. 2 Door), Ross Foster ('28 Ford Roadster), Peter Baghorn ('35 Plymouth 4 door - project), Graeme Houghton ('39 Ford 4 door Mercury) and Peter Leontini ('33 Ford 4 door). This group of people had also received about 6-8 apologies, from others who would not be able to attend the day and who had offered expressions of interest in being involved if a club were to be formed. So it came to pass, after spreading the word that a club was going to be formed and all were welcome, that on the 13th. of April 1992, at 8.00 p.m. fourteen (14) interested people turned up at the Settlement Hotel, Cranbourne , to discuss the concept of forming a Hot Rod & Custom club. Terry Crosbie chaired the meeting and after introductions and confirmation that a club was indeed going to be formed, the main topic then turned to what name should we call ourselves. After throwing around quite a few names, some of which were real shockers, some a little twee, one name mentioned by two of those assembled started to catch on. Graeme Houghton had Throttlers on a list of names he had written up and Mark Plunkett had seen the name "Throttlers Hot Rod Club" in an old U.S. Salt Lake article about Salt Lake racing in the early forties. The name Throttlers was seen as very much a Hot Rod sounding name and seemed to fit well with those present, as all had at some stage been found to have managed to have their wives or girl friend want to throttle them. A very common thing to happen to those involved with the Hot Rod scene. The triple carbs idea was from Terry Crosbie, with the artwork and design by Craig Sayers. Throttlers Rod & Custom Club Inc. was born. |
