Dehaven Descendancy

My great great grandfather, William Smith, married Mary Dehaven, daughter
of Jesse Dehaven of London Britain, Pennsylvania. I am particularly
tracing his descendants and those of his father, Samuel II of Horsham, in
Montgomery County. For those lines, go to descendants of
Samuel II, , below. For Jesse Dehaven's Smith line of descent, Go to my
main genealogical file , see Smith group sheets at end. But people
tracing Dehaven ancestry are likely to be descended from any branch of the
family, so there is a need for the data base below. I am often finding
that to trace my close relatives I have to be able to tell people which
Dehavens they ARE descended from!

One key clue; if you know of a family tale about an ancestor named Jacob
who leant money to George Washington during the Revolutionary War and it
was never paid back, you're a Dehaven. No matter HOW you don't know how
you link up to the family. That story happened to alot of people, but no
other family REMEMBERS such a tale - let alone has been persistently fully
organized and suing in federal courts and lobbying Congress to RECOVER the
money for the past 200 years. Dehavens are one exceptional family. For
the full story, Go to
my Dehaven history page .

For more information on early Dehavens and for information on Smith lines
of descent from Jesse Dehaven, see

    German Dehaven history
    Evert's and Peter's seal, Jesse Dehaven's mark"

Unfortunately Dehavens are a feudal lot (we come from French
pre-Reformation Huguenot stock) and not too great on coordination, so
anyone researching Dehaven ancestry needs to check a half dozen places
where the information is likely to be.

A number of Dehavens belong to a mailing list, DEHAVEN-L@rootsweb.com, and
their postings are archived and searchable at mailing list (click on searches) at
Rootsweb . Several people have posted LARGE amounts of Dehaven
genealogical information to this list.

Don Shockley and Joe Patterson have a set of good and informative
biographical and genealogical documents on early Dehavens
including Samuel II's line at the USGENWEB archives under
Pennsylvania: Montgomery and Philadelphia Counties, biography.

Then there is the Dehaven Club. This large 20+ or something year old club
is a great resource. Membership is $10 per year, and you get your own
genealogy, if their president (and author) Dorothy Bertine has it, and she
has an awful lot collected. You also get three interesting newsletters
full of interesting information, and I got a set of back issues, a copy of
Baron Von Alten's chart, and a directory of the club's several hundred
members with phone numbers, addresses, and code of which Dehaven line they
belong to if they know it. You don't have to know or prove you are a
Dehaven to join the club. Bertine the genealogy-eating monster is
secretive, won't share with you an awful lot of information you need to
for instance find your immediate relatives, and also likes to harass
people with legal threats if they share their own information, so alot of
people don't give her their information, therefore she doesn't have all of
it! However, people will often share freely with each other, so one
just writes to them or calls them up on the phone. Bertine
the genealogy-eating fiend aside, Club membership is well worth the
investment. Their web site is at Dehaven Club Web site .

The information below is taken from information available to me; from
relatives and members of those lines, Baron Von Alten's chart, Helen
Martha Wright's Dehaven genealogy, Brogan family documents compiled by
D.A.R. This isn't necessarily the most up to date information, and Baron
VonAlten's chart is particularly prone to errors. The chart was compiled
to settle an estate. Compilers of such charts often have little reason to
make any effort to be accurate. It's still one of the best Dehaven
genealogical guides ever put together, and its small size (it comes as a
compact 11 X 17 or something chart) makes it popular. Following is
sections of an article on its history from a Chester County newspaper.
January unreadable, vol 9, #1, forget about the title of the newspaper, I
guess.

"DE HAVEN- A Correction. At the rooms of the Historical Society of
Pennsylvania, in Phiadelphia, and also at the Historical Society of
Montgomery County, in Norristown, there is the copy of a chart bearing the
heading, "Genealogy of de Haven." The descendants of some of teh male
lines of the immigrant "Evert in den Hoeven" (De Haven) are there given."
Author, Mrs. Carrie E. Tucker Dracasse, purports to be compiler from
original sources of a larger sheet "of a part of which the foregoing
purported to be a copy" here clarifies its history.

"The original large sheet, or, as it is better known, the "Chart", four
yards long and four feet wide, written by hand and mounted on muslin, is a
"they-say-so" chart, compiled from a correspondence carried on with De
Haven descendants in all parts of the United States, from February, 1894,
to May, 1895, by the writer of this article, and contanis the information
exactly as it was received.

"Many of the records are from "Family Bibles" or "lineage books" kept in
the families. The many inconsistencies found in the earlier generations
show taht, the constant repition of Christian Nanes in all lines, caused
great confusion when it came to recitin g traditions. No efforts were made
during that year to verify any of the statements received...no material
changes ever having been made in it for certain very definiate reasons.

"BAron Eberhard von Alten, then of Weimar, Germany, whose wife was a De
Haven, arranged the data for the printed sheet. IN 1894-1895, he had
visited America, made some researchesinNew York and Philadelphia and
called at my home in Chicago. Returning to GErmany, he employed a
genealogiest to collect such data as could be found there, which, later,
he sent me. Meanwhile, as secretary-treasurer of the "De Haven club of
Chicago," I had made the compilation from the correspondence to show the
inconsistencies and the need of careful research; had spent several weeks
among De Haven descendants in Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, being
greatly assisted in Philadelphia by Mr. Thomas R. Supplee, since deceased,
and had continued the correspondence. (Note, if this person wasn't his
only source, it is unlikely that his chart contains only information he
copied from her chart.)

Returning to America about four years later, Baron von Alten requested
the privelege of copying some of the male lines from my compilation, and
himself did the copying. In several places, as dates and locations seemd
to justify them, he made changes or additions. Records found since show
that, some of these changes and additions were not warranted by facts.

There are other errors in the printed sheet, such as come from haste in
copying, and typographical errors, which could hardly have been avoided
since the printing was done in Germany...No attempt has been made to
correct errors in the printed copies which have come to my notice..."

Mrs. Dracasse then describes the history of her De Haven family club in
Chicago, started winter 1893-4, she daughter of Ann CAtharine Dehaven
Tucker, one of the tehn two living daughters of JOhn De Haven, b
Pennsylvania. She hoped to publish the apparently considerable
information that they compiled; it doesn't say if she ever did, and I
don't know if she ever did.

The notice, which is not mandatory, serves as a warning, and also makes it hard for anyone to claim they didn't know the stuff is copyrighted. Which I bet many people don't know - I didn't until two weeks ago, and also didn't care. Anyone but Dorothy Bertine and the Dehaven Club as a legal entity have my permission to copy, use, publish, put on their web pages, even try to sell (good luck) anything on this page, subject to I retain my copyright and the rights it gives me, and noone may copyright it, own it, have proprietary rights to it, or tell other people not to publish it or give it to anyone. And I would appreciate being credited for information in these pages, not because I deserve more credit than the rest of my family who like all genealogical information it came from (!!!!!), but because crediting information puts people on notice that the material may be copyright, and a trail of uncredited information could end in a situation like the one that prompted me to put copyright notices on some of my pages, and I might not even know about it to fix it. And keep in mind that my copyright still exists if I fail to come after you and eat you for dinner, which I probably won't, since my interest is in the whole health of a family group! The reason for this notice is that a distant cousin associated with a family club recently tried to restrict the members of the entire family group from sharing, publishing on the web, or giving o public data bases like the Mormon Family History Library's or Genweb their own genealogical information, subject to the publication and sale of a book! Until that moment, I thought that the book, as a COOPERATAIVE family project, was a good idea. I VERY strongly believe that a family's genealogical information belongs to the entire family, and noone has a right to tell people what they can and can't do with their own genealogical information, prevent them from using their own genealogical information, or interfere with communication of such basic and critical information within a family. The reality of modern family communication is that most families in this country are l3 or so generations old, some far older, and huge, and their members don't know who or where each other are, and have limited at best interest in direct communication if they did. A family still needs to transmit its basic genealogical, genetic health and historical information, and under the circumstances that communication is necessarily largely public. It takes place via the Web and large data bases, where people can access it. Unfortunately, another fact of modern intellectual life is retain the right to use one's own "intellectual property" is copyright it. This is a major issue in professions that do substantial academic and scientific research, most of which depend on the free exchange and open availability of knowledge and of research findings. So the purpose of the copyright notice is to make it clear to all that this information is freely available AND WILL REMAIN SO. The reasons why Dorothy Bertine and the Dehaven Club don't have my permission to use it are that I don't want my information legally entangled with people who are acting like this, and I can't justify to my relatives letting people like this have our collective information.
