Let Him Go (Dedicated to Matthew Shepard)I hear myself Whispering "let him go" It's not your problem. Things are simple that way You live, if you like women ...but you were different, they say. You liked men So the normal people cast your fate ...with pistols and anger. Directed at you. Why? You like men So you can not be normal. I hear myself Whispering "let him go" It's not your problem But you don't listen You make him suffer You make him an example ...and then You say you did not know Hoping to hide your biases ...ignorance is not bliss. You liked women, so you're normal But why did you have to prove it? How can you be that simple? You left an innocent man for dead He's hanging on, but For how long? I hear myself Whispering "let him go" Why does there have to be a problem? Hang on...aren’t we all human beings? Hang on...why can’t you love whomever you choose? Hang on...why can't it be that simple? Hang on... Just a little while longer... I heard of your passing early this morning And I got angry, at the normal people ...They act simple that way... I hear myself Whispering "let him go" And finally, my voice is heard Because no one can hurt you now... ---Originally written on October 13, 1998. This poem is dedicated to Matthew Shepard.
