It
is the dawn of the Thirtieth Century. The First Solar War has ended
as chronicled in the upcoming game Starlancer, and the Four Houses
of Humanity rule known space. Earth and the inhabitable worlds of
its solar system are distant memories, mute reminders of humanity's
appetite for self-destruction. Now,
with the coming of the Age of Conquest, humanity has begun to focus
its efforts towards expansion into the frontier worlds.
Starting
in a city, your character can go see the Ship Dealer, who will offer
to sell any of the 14 total flyable ships in the game. The Equipment
Dealer will help you outfit your ship with laser, missiles, tractor
beams and a whole host of other add-ons. There is also a Commodity
Dealer that you can visit to buy or sell any of the tradable goods
in the game.
But
it’s the Bar that really drives the game. You can view news reports
and collect rumors here that will lead you to potential jobs. The
Mission Vendor posts advertisements for jobs across the galaxy.
These are generated dynamically by the game universe. “The engine
that drives Freelancer is based entirely on trade,” according to
Roberts. Planets that need commodities will encourage prospectors
to set up trade routes.
The
economically disenfranchised may turn to piracy and raid the trade
routes. This will then lead to bounties being issued for the pirates.
You can take any role within this dynamic.
