Course 8: Shifting Sand Land

(Required: 8 Stars, First Key)
(Location: Brick wall, 2 left turns from Course 7)

Star 1: In the Talons of the Big Bird
(Recommended: Wing Cap)
From where you enter the course, run straight forward until you see the Whirly-Bird (the funny looking
red guy with the helicopter on his head). Jump on him and hold A and you will spin up to the
top of the stone gazebo. If you miss, use Mario’s Triple Jump to get to the top.
Get the Wing Cap and fly to the other side of the Pyramid. Ascend the pillar on the
left and wait for the Klepto the Condor with the Star in his talons. Jump into him when he flies by you
to free the Star. Be careful! As his name suggests, Klepto is a thief. If you take his Star,
he will try to steal your cap! If he does, you will take more damage if you get hit!
Once you knock the star loose, it will fly to in between the pillars on the far side of the Pyramid.

Star 2: Shining Atop the Pyramid
Method 1:
(Required: Wing Cap)
Go back to the top of the gazebo and get the Wing Cap. Launch Mario into the air
and fly towards the Pyramid. As you come near it, you will see the Star,
shining atop the Pyramid!
Method 2:
At the top of the gazebo, get the Shiny Shell from the "!" block. With it you can
go anywhere for as long as you want to until you bump into a wall or press Z.
Shred right up the Pyramid – jump if you slow down – straight to the Star!

Star 3: Inside the Ancient Pyramid
(Recommended: Wing Cap)
Return to the Pyramid (see Star 2) and land on the ledge sticking out of the middle and enter the
hole in front of you. You will be taken to the inside of the Pyramid. Walk to the right, and then turn
left at each corner. When you reach Grindel (the brown Thwomp-like block), jump on his head,
and before he flattens you against the ceiling, jump to the second floor. Once you get to the
second floor, go back in the direction you came in. Climb up the pole to get to the third floor.
Once there, either Triple Jump to get over the grate, or grab onto the grate with the A button
and climb across the grate. On the other side, watch out for Spindel (see screenshot) go into
the small depression in the wall:

Keep on going. At the top of the Pyramid, there will be another Grindel. Jump on top of him
and ride on him to the other side of the bridge. Once there, climb up the small hill, and collect the Star!
P.S.: If you are killed in your quest up the walls of the Pyramid, you will restart the level from inside the Pyramid.

Star 4: Stand Tall on the Four Pillars
(Required: Wing Cap)
Put on the Wing Cap, and take flight. Land on each of the four pillars surrounding the Pyramid,
and stand still! After doing so on each pillar, top of the Pyramid will rise and blow up!
Go to the top of the Pyramid and enter the hole that has been revealed. An elevator will bring you down
to the big red block in the center of the floor of the Pyramid. Enter the hole in the block,
and you will be taken to Eyerock’s chamber. After yelling at you for waking him up, he will try
to punch you with his huge stone fists. He’s slow and not very tough to avoid, but boy is he strong.
Getting flattened by one of his fists takes away three units of energy (four if you aren’t wearing your cap)
and if he pushes you off the platform, you’re dead. To beat him, punch his eyes when he opens them.
It will take three punches for each fist.
After giving you his last speech, he will give you the Star!

Star  5: Free Flying for 8 Red Coins
(Required: Wing Cap)
First Four Red Coins:
Make your way to the cannon at the far end of the course. Before jumping in, put on the Wing Cap.
Aim directly for the top of the palm tree in the oasis at the far end of the course.
You will soar upwards. Steady yourself and fly around the pyramid to collect the first four Red Coins.
(It’s a lot harder than it looks)
Red Coin 5: In the very beginning of the course, turn around and go as far as you can.
Be careful not to go too near the Quicksand!
Red Coin 6: In one of the blocks underneath the gazebo.
Red Coin 7: In the water of oasis on the far corner of the course (watch out for Klepto!).
Red Coin 8: In the middle of the Maze.
Star: On top of the gazebo.

Star 6: Pyramid Puzzle
Make your way to the top of the Pyramid, right before Star 3. Right before the Star, by the sand waterfall,
you will see a piece missing from the guardrail. Walk slowly off the edge of the ledge and you will
drop to a tiny platform with a coin on it. It is the first piece of the Puzzle. Jump to the other side of the
waterfall, and you will get the second coin. The third coin is on the other side of the waterfall.
The fourth and fifth Puzzle pieces are on the sand conveyor belt. After you get all five coins.
The Star will appear at the end of the conveyor belt.
P.S.: If you make one mistake, you will have to start over.

Star 7: Back into the Pyramid for 100 Coins
Look all around the desert and find as many coins as you can (you should get around 55).
Remember the 8 Red Coins (=16 Yellow Coins). Inside the Pyramid there is a Blue Coin Switch
(=15 Yellow Coins). Get that and any other coin you see. By the time you get to the top you should have the
necessary 100. As usual, the Star appears above your head.

Course 7: Lethal Lava Land
Course 9: Dire, Dire Docks
