Lathen, an orphaned child, was raised a monk dedicted to Mynbruje in a Monastery within the outer edge of the Liaj Jungle. Lathen proved to be an astute student and was quickly promoted to translating ancient texts like those that the Martyr Scholar once found to contain the warning of the Horrors. A typical human youth, the Headmaster of the Monastery found it difficult to keep Lathen attentive to his work. For his own part, Lathen was torn between the work given him by the Monks who had taken him in and the desire to see the world and find his place in it. Knowing the potential importance of the texts only furthered his suffering.
The Monastery took in refugees, Questors of Lochost who were nearly killed during the arrival of the Theran Behemoth known as Triumph. The hidden halls kept away prying Theran scouts who were especially interested in stamping out all of Lochost's Rebels and the refugees were able to recuperate. Their stories kindled a fire in Lathen and his time spent writing by candlelight became all the more agonizing.
It was immediately following the great slave revolt at Triumph that The Stranger arrived. Perhaps only Lathen, watching the Headmaster's door impatiently, noted the arrival and departure of the mysterious visitor. Only the Headmaster spoke to him and after the visitation a new book appeared in the study.
In a moment of destiny, Lathen was given the choice whether to study the ways of the book with the Questors of Lochost and any others who truly loved justice. Without hesitation, Lathen accepted the duty presented. He, along with the Questors and a small selection of Mynbruje's Monks, would learn the ways of the outside world and be sent out in a desperate attempt to counter the efforts of the Theran invaders. Lots were drawn to determine where the new Freedom Fighters would travel to raise the forces to stop the Therans. Lathen drew dead East: Into the heart of Triumph.
Dubbed Fireheart for his enthusiasm, once outside, Lathen found his ardor cooled. Even freedom from what he thought was his prison did not free him from the knowledge that he might have best served studying the old texts of the library, that he might have uncovered some lost technology of the ancients or some information vital to the survival of all name-givers. Burned by his own fire, Lathen deliberated and then resolutely set out for the Theran Behemoth.
