At the Electronic Entertainment Expo in May 1999, Nintendo revealed an alliance with Matsushita and IBM to produce their next generation console, code-named Dolphin. Matsushita will supply Nintendo with DVD media and DVD drives for Dolphin. IBM will provide a custom PowerPC-based CPU for the console. Preliminary specifications have been released.

CPU

  • Based on PowerPC architecture
  • 400 MHz clock speed
  • Semiconductor process 0.18 micron copper technology
  • Manufactured at IBM's Burlington, Vermont plants

Graphics Co-processor

  • 128-bit custom chip designed by ArtX Inc. of Palo Alto, California
  • Design headed by Wei Yen of ArtX, former head of N64 chip design at Silicon Graphics
  • 200 MHz clock speed
  • Semiconductor process 0.18 micron technology
  • Embedded DRAM

System Memory

  • No amount of RAM yet specified
  • High-speed DRAM technology from Rambus
  • Memory bandwidth of 3.2 GB/second

Software Medium

  • Matsushita DVD technology
  • Enhanced Counterfeit Protection
  • Maximum capacity: 4.7 GB (assumed single-layer, single-sided)
