"The Secrets of Niblenem"

The First PBeM for the
Misery Ascendant Campaign Setting

A shadow cloaked figure walks down the crowded streets, avoiding the stares of countless onlookers. Clad in a black flowing cloak, his menacing glare barely hidden by its cowl. He holds a stack of parchments in his hand, posting them along the walls at irregular intervals, pausing his traipse of the road only long enough to walk into the inn where more of the sheets are dispersed. He moves quickly, as if his time is extremely limited. He continues his mad dash through the streets, passing through most major roads to deliver his message. His every step draws the attention of every person he passes, some in fear and others in wonder. A man steps unknowingly into his path, and the cloaked figure pushes him to the side with one deft swipe, his movement undeterred. And then as quickly as he had come, the mysterious figure was nowhere to be seen, lost to the shadows that had brought him. His message remains, for those few that are able to read.

“A call to arms has been made. Come one, come all, for the adventure awaits! A select group of six travelers from across the lands shall be hand picked for the mission of the sages. Those chosen will be sent to the newly discovered continent of Niblenem, to research and inform of the inhabitants and resources found therein. Those chosen to make the trek and return shall be handsomely rewarded for their efforts. The voyage embarks in two weeks time, so haste is of the utmost importance!
Those interested must only express his desire, and you will be contacted by a member of the sage council.”

It is signed in some illegible script, and dated on today’s date, this seventeenth day of Dersen. As you hold the message, you cannot help but feel the wanderlust rising in your throat. To experience the new lands, and to be remembered for their discovery seems a great thing indeed. All around you see people holding the message as you are, ranging from small excited boys to men of great girth and stature, each as excited as the next for the coming adventure.

Welcome to the Misery Ascendant campaign setting, the first attempt at online gaming in the world of Misery Ascendant. I trust that you have taken ample time to peruse the site to familiarize yourself in some way with the setting you are about to embark upon, and mayhap even joined the Misery Ascendant Mailing List, the only place to get the new material as it is released. If not, then no matter, this page will provide you with all of the appropriate links to important information that you will need for your journey. Come, rest your legs by the open fire of hospitality, pray sit, and learn of the secrets of Cyuk, and enjoy it while you can, for it may be the last bit of warmth you ever chance upon in this accursed world.

This is the first attempt at taking Misery Ascendant gaming online, and hopefully our first of many successful PbEM's. As of now the groundwork is simple, the frequency of mails will be anywhere in between one and three mails per week, but will more than likely hover around one, due to time, work, and school constraints. If this load seems too much for you to bear, worry not, if your wish is still to apply for a character submission for the campaign and we like it enough, then we may make a special case of you as a part-time player. At the time of the initial invitation mail, character submissions will be due in two weeks time, by midnight of the seventh day of March. This deadline will not unexpectedly get closer due to overwhelming submission entries, as we are trying to get the best quality work for our campaign as possible. There will be no limit as to how many characters will be accepted into the campaign, as anyone having the necessary votes by our cabinet members will be eligible to play. This particular PbEM will have a total of six characters, and alignment alone will not play any part in the decision making process of acceptance.

We expect a character description and history for each submitted character, to be of a minimum length requirement of 1300 words, 300 for the physical description, and 1000 for the character's history. These requirements are steadfast friends, and any entries not amounting to the minimum requirements will not be reviewed, and instead, flatly denied. Histories should detail the character life up until the point when he began adventuring. You are to assume that your characters will begin on the first level of experience, with zero experience points. Any actions, which your particular characters undergo within their character histories, will not be counted toward their present experience point total. Furthermore, any weapons or gear found in the history may be completely denied by the DM. Misery Ascendant is a low magic campaign, please take this into consideration when you apply for entry. For further information on the Misery Ascendant campaign setting visit the Campaign Overview section of the site. For examples of characters made specifically for the Misery Ascendant campaign setting, visit the Manifestations of Anguish section of our web site at this time. Those seeking information on the various dieties specific the campaign setting should visit the Divine Faith page. All character submissions should be sent to LordArlannd@aol.com.

Mails should be sent directly to your corresponding DM, unless you wish for your character's actions to be known by the other party members. Any discussions between player characters should also be sent to the DM, as we plan to save all messages in the campaign for a future campaign archive of sorts, where all of the mails will be compiled and edited into a story format, and kept on the PbEM section of the Misery Ascendant web site for future viewing. It is therefor necessary that all character conspiracies also be sent to the DM, in order to get the whole story recorded as it happened.
