Ever since this page started on April 19, 1997, it has grown unto what it is today. I feel an obligation to trace back some of the landmarks that made this page what it is. In this section you will see this, as well as a "behind the scenes" look at Crono & Dekar's RPG Homepage. Note: This section is NOT simply a "What's Old" section.
I first became interested in computers when, back in 6th grade, another student taught me some BASIC (a programming language). Much later, when the Internet went mainstream, I constructed a personal webpage. The webpage I constructed, though, was not the one that ended up being this page. It was actually more of a personal webpage than an RPG one, with poems by me, SimCity 2000 stuff, and short Quest for Glory reviews (which were later actually edited from that version into the ones in Other RPG Reviews). Later (I can't remember when, but when I still used Windows 3.1) I dumped the proceedings with that page and made the framework for Crono & Dekar's RPG Homepage. Back then this site only had Final Fantasy 3 (back when I didn't own it), Chrono Trigger, Lufia 2, Secret of Evermore, EarthBound, and Super Mario RPG; each one having only pictures, music, and a review (with the exception of Chrono Trigger which started out with Memorable Quotes, now known as Famous Quotes & Scenes). The only other things were an About Me (also adopted from Jerad Hurst's Home Page) and a small Links section.
On the day I built up Crono & Dekar's RPG Homepage (let's just call it CDRPGHP for short) I searched Geocities for hours, looking for some hole in the system, because FREE homepages seemed too good to be true. I originally started it up on the TimesSquare/Dungeon/2856 address, but I entered the wrong primary email address and never got my info, so I registered the 2857 address. Anyway, I started my page, and I was happy. Actually, to be honest, the April 19th starting date was only an estimate. I had started the What's New section a few days after I began the CDRPGHP (4/23/97), and forgot exactly how many days ago it was. April 19th, though, is probably the actual date.
In the beginning, updates were pretty much daily, but they were small, including such things as webring additions (which it doesn't anymore). A mere nine days after the beginning, I posted the Comments and/or add a link section. Then, on the 4th of May I started Crono & Dekar's RPG Webring (CDRPGWR). Back then, the webring required the member to manually enter their info in the fragment (some of you long timers to the webring may remember that). It wasn't until the 25th of May, though, that I added the first site to my ring and a day after that I added my second (besides my own). Ironically enough, the first site added to the queue (The End of Time, which is now down) didn't add the fragment to their site until much later. So the first two sites to get added to the ring respectivally were Tiga's Homepage and the CT site that I loved, The Arris Dome. It wasn't until June 19th that I added three more sites to my webring again. Later the number of sites added per day started increasing. Once my webring got a decent amount of sites, I started updating the count of webring members mentioned on the main page for every ten sites. Actually (not trying to sound egotisical) I try to keep the mentioned number about ten below the actual count so that if I have to remove sites from the webring, I won't have to lower the number.
Meanwhile, the What's New section looked different from what it looks like recently. As you can see in some of the early What's Old sections (like 4/97 and 5/97) the placement of the anchors in the days' looked awkward, but I didn't realize that. Instead of italics, "Notes" (for an example, look in the top paragraph) were written in typewriter style. There were more sentences and mentionings of things to come because there was no In the Works section or Update List. Also, much to my embarrassment later, I had misused the word "propoganda" in my link and webring descriptions, thinking that it just meant "miscellanious stuff."
One day, while staying in a hotel in who remembers where, I had gotten bored and decided to write a story for Frog of Chrono Trigger, known as Frog's Story in The Aftermath series. I had later typed it in the computer and revised it many times (but not enough times I later discovered during my re-revision). Frog's Story was added to CDRPGHP on the 30th of May, the day Frog's Theme was also added; my original intention was to use Frog's Theme in the story, but later I decided against it. I had decided right from the get go that I would do a story on every character, although at the time I could only easily think of plots for Magus and Robo (hence the order of the stories). I had included the famous "Mysterious Woman" and the idea that Crono, Marle, and Lucca, while looking for Crono's mom, would stop by every time and help them. Some of the ideas for the series I developed late in the series, and had to stretch the old information to fit the new one. (Some of you may remember the thing about Mother and her "abilities" in the Mysterious Woman's Story. I had to stretch what I had said in Robo's Story to fit what would work. Also, it was not until the last instant of writing the Mysterious Woman's Story that I developed the identity of the Entity.)
Before the Mysterious Woman's Story I had gotten numerous emails asking, even begging, for her identity. I would not reveal it (I never changed my mind on her identity), but on July 1st I created a contest in which 10 people would win. These people could take two guesses on who the Mysterious Woman was, and would get added to the Hall of Fame (see below) if they guessed correctly. Those people were also sworn to secrecy and not tell ANYONE. To tell the truth, all 10 people that entered got the answer right, hence the subject of the emails I sent to them, "Maybe I made it TOO easy..." From this until the Mysterious Woman's Story, it wasn't too uncommon for me to get an email asking for her identity. (I usually replied that if you think it is a certain person, then it probably is that person.)
On June 6th, Quasi-Lemur had sent me a title image for my page. Back then, it was a simple 1 level heading in that space. He later made a second one, because the first one took up quite a bit of room of the page. Much later, when I noticed most people had their monitors in 800 X 600 (I had mine in 640 X 480), I took the original, resized in a bit, and made it fit in 800 X 600 so it looked better.
Around that time I had also gotten a request to put Magus' Theme in the background music. So, from an idea I had gotten visiting the Unofficial Squaresoft Homepage (later changed to Square Net and now RPGamer), I decided to have alertnative background musics besides Mog's Theme. This started out with five themes, and later turned into the number it is at today. I had done this on the Unframed version too, but later realized that all five midis (especially Enhasa at +60K in size) took too long to load, so the Unframed page was changed back to only have Mog's Theme.
Going back a bit in history, the Hall of Fame and Universe of Fame started on the 7th of July, but did not get there first members until the Mysterious Woman contest inducted the first two members, Cronokyle and Kip Davis, on August 2nd. Cronokyle was also the first to get in the Universe of Fame a week later. (Many thanks to him for all the stuff he has given to this webpage.) One may ask, "how did you come up with the name 'Universe of Fame?'" Well, like the names of many other sections of this page, I chose it because it sounded cool.
Probably the biggest individual game part on this site was probably the EarthBound Combination Spells added on 7/7/97. I had this idea for a long time, "What would happen if you mixed spells?" This section is meant to spark creativity and/or make the viewers of the section go, "Oooh... cool. If only that were in the game." I thought about doing this for other games too, but their spells were similar, and I felt that EarthBound had more of a variety of spells. Much later (10/17/98) I adopted the combinations spells into the Another One series, starting with The Reality.
I know, this is a long file, so if you want to take a break go ahead and do so. I'll wait........................................ Ready? OK, let's continue.
When the Update List was started on July 15th, nobody had added themselves to it until much later, and so the updates continued to be small for awhile. Oddly enough, it took longer for me to update the page back then than now when the updates are bigger (maybe it's the new RAM). When I got the first few people in the Update List, I started typing out emails to notify people of what was being updated, and some other miscellanious stuff. Today, to save time and patience, I type out my Update List messages beforehand and simply copy them into the ListBot message. I keep a backup until the message is sent out. The list originally started on GetReminded, but it closed down. Luckily a day after it let me get a list of the people in my list to notify them of the move. For any of you who may wish to get archived Update List messages, I have messages back to 10/31/97.
July 28th, a momentous day, I was proud to get my first award. This award was Flea's WOW award. Proud of my award, I started a section for them.
A few of the lesser sections were added in this August. The Poll was added on the first with three questions on Final Fantasy 3. Four days later came the first Editorial: Where are the N64 RPGs? The original intention was to replace the editorial after update to the editorials, which would be on a monthly basis, but later I decided to add them randomly and would keep and archive of them. This section was a chance to let loose my opinions with my video game opinions, no matter how disliked they were (which was a big case with the Chrono Trigger 2 editorials). Later in August was when the BIG section was added... the Humor section.
It was originally going to be called "How to Know You Play RPGs Too Much" (Note: not "Ways to know..."), but after considering that most people would be confused by HTKYPRPGSTM, I decided to simply name it "Humor." This actually turned out the best, because WsTKYPRPGSTM was not the only thing in the section. Randykid also emailed me two funny Chrono Trigger interviews and Jason K. Jones submitted a script on What would happen if marle kissed Frog. Submitting Humor section entries has remained the way that most people enter the Hall of Fame (although not the only way they can) and has remained one of the major "identities" par se of this site.
A couple more of the very original things for a games section were both for FF7 and both added on the same day (Halloween, 1997). These two were the Enemy Skills and Materia Combos and Sevens of the Seven sections. After thinking about how some walkthrus on FF3 US mentioned Strago's Lores, I decided to make a guide for the Enemy Skill Materia's skills. This list would have the Enemy Skills, which enemy/enemies used them, and a note on what they do. It wasn't until later that I did the Enemies with Enemy Skills part of it. I also wanted to have a section for the materia combos, but I didn't want them to stand alone, so I binded them with the Enemy Skills. Sevens of the Seven came about when I noticed that the number "seven" was used in the game a lot. The "the" in Sevens of the Seven came from my alias for Final Fantasy games. Sometimes instead of saying Final Fantasy 7 I would say, "The seven," or instead of saying FF6 (FF3 U.S.) I would say "The six."
To keep myself from constantly saying "coming soon (maybe)" in What's New, I created the In The Works section. This shown that I was working on something intended for this page, but that it would not necessarily get added. However, there was only one thing added to In The Works that was never added to the page, and that was the Crono & Dekar: Our Guides section. I gave that up after realizing that it would be annoying having to update that every time I added a section to my page (which isn't that rare anymore). Also, something you may have been wondering about if you noticed, is that the In The Works section has the filename iow.html. That "o" was caused by somewhat of an accident when typing the name. For some reason I had thought "iow" for In The Works, so I typed it in. I never changed the name, because 1) I had gotten used to it being "iow," and 2) I felt it would be like messing with a piece of history.
Now we get to the making of this section, the Site History section. I started on this section the day before finals (1/12/99) and typed up this paragraph before finishing the rest the next morning. (I had finished the "waiting" part before, and just skipped to here to type this. Also, while typing this, it is the elder of my sister's birthday.)
For awhile I had been comparing the webring logo to others and thought, "Hey, mine looks pretty old and ghetto." So, I made new images that looked better and after a week or two when I was done with them, I uploaded the new logo and new "Next Site" logo to my page (2/7/99) and they became the main ones. The reason for the length of time between the creation and the uploading to my server was due to the fact that I was looking through my webring for bad emails so that I would get as little return emails as possible.
Now, here's some screen shots of Crono & Dekar's RPG Homepage as it has developed over time.

A re-creation of the original layout of this webpage. This is not completely accurate because it is not the original this is only a re-creation, not the actual thing. Intended for resolution 640 X 480. |

The second layout. I had lots of ideas for the page, but I put everything in different frames and it was quite crowded. Also, I got a few complaints about Mog's Theme popping up every time the page loaded. |

The current layout. I put the page logo's pic on the main section, moving it from the frame it was in, trusting that you could remember the site's name. ^_^ The jukebox was moved to the bottom so it wouldn't be as conspicuous, setting the default to "Off" and removing the "Play, Rewind, etc." thing. Also, the main font was changed to Arial I used cascading style sheets to remove the underline from the links. |
Now a look at the webring images over time:

Other miscellanious tidbits - Originally the FFs on this page used Roman numerals, but because they could get easily confused (like VII with VIII), I changed them to the current Western numbers. // The first Tips & Tricks section was for EarthBound, and later I added T&Ts for FF7, FF3, and FFT. // The reviews didn't look like they do now always. The +/- section, the points, and the "What do I say?" were added later (in that order). // For awhile I maintained a chat room on IRC's Dalnet called #rpgers, but the traffic to it never picked up, so I ended it. Maybe if I get enough support to start another one I will. // On the day this was added, the Site History section became the first to use text in any color besides the white text color or the green link color (look at the //s).
This file will be appended to as more and more things on my page become "historic."
