These are the notes I've made from playing various games.

Banjo-Kazooie

Very similar to Mario (a main world linked to several other worlds). The main difference is where Mario has just health, coins, hats, and stars, B-K has honey, rings, jiggys, red feathers, gold feathers, launch disks, jinjos, and more, making this a lot more tedious game.

Some bugs have been fixed from Mario (eg. there is a separate underwater health system), but others are worse (the default camera following is a whole magnitude worse than Mario).

A big bug is a tap of the Z key while selecting a game erases the saved game. Never before has loosing all your work been so easy. My 3 year old has twice deleted everything, so I'm forced to hide the game while I'm not playing.

There is a good FAQ but its not quite complete, especially in the notes area.

I have compiled my own notes, mostly of things I had trouble with.

Bomberman 64

There is a great FAQ for this game.

Bomb Staircase

The bomb staircase is not explained well in the FAQ IMO, so here is my version:
-+
 |O Oo
 |O oo O o +--
-+---------+

You need 2 walls to do this, as bombs won't stack vertically without a wall to stop them bouncing away. The wall you are ascending works fine for the 2 big bomb stack, but you need a side wall for the oO and oo stack.

  1. Face the wall to be ascended, throw 2 pumped up bombs at it.
  2. Drop a small bomb, leaving a gap.
  3. Throw a pumped up bomb at the side wall, above the dropped small bomb.
  4. Drop a small bomb nearby (only a small gap).
  5. Throw a small bomb at the side wall, above the dropped small bomb.
  6. Throw a pumped up bomb in line with a gap.
  7. Drop a small bomb in line with a gap.

You need a small ledge to jump off to start the bouncing process.

Note that you can use a longer version:

-+
 |O O
 |O o O o o o +--
-+------------+

However, this requires several attempts, as Bomberman must hit the oO stack at exactly the right bounce. I have yet to see a need for this in the game, I just discovered it by accident.

Note that when using a small/big bomb stack, it works better with the big one on top.

Jet Force Gemini

To start with JFG is just a mindless shoot-em-up. Tribals are thrown in so you can't just blaze away at anything you see, and are the main scoring system, further encouraging saving them.

About 4 levels in, more and more puzzle elements are added. They start off being find and shoot puzzles, but move into movement puzzles later.

Moving the characters is difficult compared to Banjo-Kazooie and Mario, but the default camera following is excellent.

Rare made the mistake of making the trigger (Z) the firing mechanism. In targetting mode you use the joystick and the trigger, and pulling the trigger always causes the targetting sight to move. This is one reason the FAQ

The wall-kick mostly means doing a side-flip (running away from the wall, turning abruptly and jumping), then doing a wall-kick.
