I know a place where the butterflies flew
Where the birds used to sing
And their singing would bring
All the joys and wonders of the places I knew
The places I knew
I know a place where the scotchbroom bloomed
Where the snakes in the grass would rustle
And the birds in the tress would bustle
But now the snakes, birds, and the flowers seem doomed
The flowers seemed doomed
I know a place where the grass grew tall
Where God seemed so near
It’s been a long time since I’ve been there, now I fear
To the muddy ground my spirits will fall
My spirits will fall
And the hawk that I saw, drifting with grace
Does anyone care that he’s not there
The sky and air silent, so very bare
I ask my lord why as I lift my face
As I lift my face
Now when I go where the butterflies flew
The world seems so wrong, the butterflies are gone
I listen but hear no beautiful song
And when I looked for the birds, I only saw a few
I only saw a few
Now when I go where the scotchbroom bloomed
I looked to the grass but listen there’s no rustle
I look in the trees and hear no bustle
All I see is the stump where a tree once loomed
Where a tree once loomed
Now when I go where the grass grew tall
The soil is sliding, nature’s given up the fight
There’s no shade, the sun is too bright
Because progress leaves nothing, it crushes all
It crushes all
All in it’s never ending path
