Workshops

Knight’s most recent foreign assignment was under the banner of Journalists for Human Rights (JHR) in Ghana, West Africa.

He led workshops on the role of the journalist in reporting on human rights, the environment, violence, right to information and gay rights.

He also worked with journalists at three Ghanaian TV stations, a radio station and a newspaper.

Co-founder and Executive Director of JHR, Alexandra Sicotte-Levesque, reports:

'Tim’s training sessions in Ghana were able to inspire and motivate journalists like never before. All journalists left the sessions with a full sense of their responsibility as servants of the people and the skills necessary to communicate effectively with their audience. Tim has the capacity to offer journalists new perspectives by challenging their ideas and misconceptions. His unique approach has opened many doors for Ghanaian journalists.”

Before Ghana, Knight conducted a major 5-week TV Journalism workshop for the private South African network, e.tv.

Back home, Knight ran training workshops for groups of Canadian broadcast journalists as well as the Canadian Radio and Television News Directors Association (RTNDA). He also led a TV Journalism seminar for the Innoversity Creative Summit in Toronto.

Earlier, he ran workshops in both South Africa and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The first was for the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).

Co-Trainer Henry Kowalski, former head of CTV News, reports “That I got to work with Tim was a bonus. He reminded me that this was not only important work but a hell of a lot of fun."

Participant response was equally positive.

Written evaluations:

  • Best part was partaking in Tim's experience overall. Excellent. Can Tim come back more often.

  • The training was excellent but very short. Extend the courses.

  • Best part was critiquing bulletins and writing. We should get management and writers on the same course.

  • Tim is excellent. A very experienced broadcaster imparting "simple" but oh so useful information that will without a doubt improve my understanding of news as a product. Bring Executive Producers etc. on board.

  • Very high evaluation of the quality of the workshop. Like oxygen to the drowning. Mr. Knight is a pro.

  • More than teaching me how to write, you pricked my brain. The message was, where's your passion? Are you giving it your all? Are you talking to your viewer? I'll try to practice what I learnt in your sessions. Encounters with people like you make it so much clearer. Thank you.

  • I have been in production for so long and was not exposed to story training. It has been an eye-opener for me. Good workshop, practical.

  • Best part was actually seeing how easy it is to tell a story in a short and simple way. The course provided all the answers to the writing of a good news story. Great help. Improvement would be having a refresher course every year.

  • Best part was Tim Knight. The workshop was of a very high quality. It would be great if we could have them regularly.

The SABC's Editor of Training and Development, Amina Frense, reports:

"There was great enthusiasm after your training -- for the passing on of new skills and knowledge and a better way of doing things.

"There was envy that the chosen few were exposed, there were requests for follow up training and private sessions, knives are out in the corridors about why some were selected and not others.

"Since the training there has been marked improvement in the quality of the product/scripting/relevant pictures. It has also brought more credibility to the News Renewal project especially for the National 20.00h Bulletin. Morning Live ratings have increased substantially.

"The most noticeable effect on individuals and programmes has been less waffle, more focus, better scripting, clearer role definitions and some inspired reporting."

Later, tim Knight + associates worked with a group of Bosnian, Muslim, Serb, Croat and Montenegrin journalists in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Again, written participant evaluations of the course were exceptionally high.

Importance of Subjects to My Work 89%
Effectiveness of Workshop/s 91%

Written evaluations evaluations included:

  • This workshop was very successful; people are great and very generous. Weather was awful. Tim is a very nice man, full of knowledge and with a great wish to give his knowledge to us.

  • I devoted myself to seminar completely; hope to see you in the future. (Best part was) meeting our colleagues, new friendships, new professional relations, opening new possibilities for our profession.

  • Trainer and workshop 10. Very good attempt to improve the way things are in our newsrooms. (Best part was) video presentations that were following items we discussed; discussions with colleagues and trainer.

  • Trainer and workshop were excellent; simple and effective lectures. Now I have larger experience and for that I am grateful.

  • I would recommend this seminar to everyone. Trainers gave us new ideas and motivation to find new ideas. We've had an opportunity to learn a lot of things. (Best part was) investigative journalism, storytelling, focus, spoken language.

  • Good organization, excellent items, excellent presentation, new ideas. What I liked most of all is practical part of the workshop: writing, interviewing, etc. (Best part was) new knowledge, new ideas, practical part of the training.

  • Trainer 10 ... Workshop 8 ... Me 8 ... My colleagues 8.

  • Very good workshop ... we have learned new things ... very good trainers ... solid organization ... excellent approach ... exchange of experience between colleagues.

  • Good trainer; Tim established close contact with participants; high level of communication between all participants. (Best part was) team work, investigative journalism.
