Tim Perfect, Actor
Shakespeare

I would like to talk about one of my great loves: Shakespeare. I had my first experience with Shakespeare when I was eighteen, with a theatre in White Bear Lake, MN called Shakespeare & Company. I have spent seven seasons with S&C, and from my time there, I gained the my love for Shakespeare's language, and for the style in which they presented it. Outdoors, three plays in rotating rep during the summer. It was this format, and the feeling of being outdoors performing that made me want to create that feeling again. It was out of this that the Cleveland Shakespeare Festival was born, and one of the driving forces behind my return to the Twin Cities.

It is in Shakespeare's language that his power as a playwright is shown and what he has to offer us as actors and directors is in his words. All of the character's thoughts and emotions are all in the text. In my final semester of my MFA program, I had a Shakespeare scene study class with Edward Payson Call, protege of Sir Tyrone Guthrie, who founded the Guthrie Theatre. Ed said simply, "Love the words". How true. For if you truly explore and let the sound and the feeling of the words affect you as an actor, you will see the truth of Shakespeare's language. Through my voice training, I found this was the case as well. This is part of the approach that we take at CLSF, a true attention to releasing the language, and making these plays contemporary entertainments for today's audiences.

"Love the words."
