Kennedy Space Center, on the east coast of Florida, was designated the Launch Operations Center for NASA in July 1962, four years after NASA itself was formed. In fact, the site had been in use somewhat earlier than this, and was the departure point for Alan Shepard's historic first spaceflight (for an American!) in May 1961. Cape Canaveral has been in continuous use ever since, and was the launch site for America's excursions to the moon, to the Skylab, and via shuttle to Mir, Hubble and other locations in Earth orbit.
Cape Canaveral is a popular tourist destination and lies just outside the City of Cape Canaveral. The settlement has been in existence since the 1920s - although much of its recent growth has been due to the presence of the Space Center - and is located halfway between Miami and Jacksonville.
| Clearwater, Virginia, is the stated location of Lisa Davies' home and school. Although there are 16 locations in the United States going by the name 'Clearwater', none of them appear to be in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Orlando, Florida, (see below and picture, right) was used for filming in the unaired pilot and 'Origin Story' in order to add the correct American atmosphere.

Dorney Court is an early tudor manor house built in 1440 and located near Windsor. It has been continuously occupied by the Palmer family for four and a half centuries and retains original fittings, furniture and tapestries accumulated throughout its history. It experienced a minor fame in 1661 when the first pineapple grown in the UK was raised at Dorney Court and presented to Charles II - who also courted one of the ladies of the family. It is now maintained and restored through income arising from visitors, corporate events and location filming, having appeared in Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased, 2000) amongst other programs. The grounds incorporate a small farm and a garden centre as well as the thirteen century church of St James, and the estate is closely linked to nearby Dorney village (which can be dated back to the Doomsday Book).
The building is now Grade I listed and is open to visitors on afternoons in August and the May bank holidays. It is close to both Eton and Windsor Castle (map).

Location filming in Orlando, Florida, was used to represent Lisa Davies' home in Clearwater, Virginia (in 'The Origin Story'). This footage was actually shot for the unaired NS pilot 'A Bad Dream Gets Better' and was recycled for use in the series proper. Among the instances in which Orlando appears on screen are some striking skylines apparently filmed from the rooftop of Lisa's apartment building, and a shot of a taxi on an elevated road. The taxi in question boasts the telephone number 699 999 on its side, which - when preceded by the area code 407 - belongs to the Orlando Yellow Cab company. In the background is the distinctive, multi-level office block at 390 N Orange Ave, making the most likely location Orlando's Highway 4.

(Above)The palm lined beach of the Bahia Honda State Park, looking out past the Bahia Honda bridge (a relic of the now-defunct Overseas Railroad) towards the southern Atlantic Ocean (photographs: Samuel Friedman, January 2007) Florida's long coastline was also used for filming scenes set on 'The Island' in the original pilot - footage that was later reused throughout the series. Later footage of the Island was filmed in Dorset (despite the South Atlantic setting), but early shots show the distinctive palm tree-dominated coastal flora and blue waters of the Atlantic coast in Florida. |
