Todd's wantlistsAfter about a 25-year absence from card collecting, I got back into the hobby after the birth of my first son in June 2000. (Okay, I did get back into the hobby in the late 1980s/early 1990s, but got back out again after going to several card shows and watching kids throwing away packs of cards that didn't have any "insert" or "chase" cards in them!) I figured it would be nice to have some vintage sets to pass along to him one day. Maybe it will stoke his interest not only in baseball, but also in baseball history. And if it doesn't, well, I'll have some cool cards to sell in 15 years to pay for his college education! My No. 1 priority is my 1971 Topps set. I'm also working on Topps sets from 1970, 1975, 1977 and 1979. I'm also working on my Reds team sets from the 1970s (the halcyon days of the Big Red Machine), and on Jan. 14, 2003, I finished a 1991 Topps set that I started 11 years ago. JSG the Younger enters the Trader Todd Hall of Fame by sending me the final two cards I need for that set. Thanks, JSG, and long live VCT! I have a little less than 100 cards to go on my 1971 set, but it's mostly those pesky high numbers! Why did they wait so long to make cards of Nolan Ryan and Roberto Clemente that year? Argh!! I've gotten some from card shows, some from EBAY, a large amount from another dealer on the Internet and many, many cards from on-line traders I discovered, including several through the Old Card Traders club and Vintage Card Traders, of which I am a proud member. My goal is to get what I consider to be excellent-to-near-mint for every card for my 1971 set. The other years, I'll settle for Excellent. My definition of NM/excellent is as follows: At least two strong corners, good color, absolutely no creases or gum stains, minor edge wear and decent centering (I'm not as big on centering as long as the card is not a complete miscut with part of another card showing). 1971 ToppsThis set is taking a long time to finish, but I'm not going to give up! If you've got some to trade, let me know. I have duplicates of many cards in very good-excellent condition. Cards marked with an * are cards that I have a pending trade or purchase for. Click here for a detailed breakdown of the cards remaining.I need: 400, 525, 527, 530, 550, 580, 595, 600, 607, 615, 624-5, 630, 640, 644-5, 648-51, 653, 654, 655, 656, 658, 664, 673, 676, 686, 688, 691-93, 697-8, 700, 704, 706, 708-9, 713, 717, 719, 722, 724, 733, 735, 738-40, 743-5, 747-51. No, I am not asking him where is the best place to score some cocaine! (Hobson was fired a few years ago as manager of the Phillies' Triple-A team after he received a package of coke via Fed Ex. Of course, he had no intention of using the drug and was going to flush it down the toilet, but when the cops came knocking at his door a few minutes after he received the package, he decided to stick it in his shaving kit for safekeeping). Chuck Bosshardt sends along three nice team cards. Dan Cipra of OBC sent me a handful of cards, including a couple of coveted Reds' postseason cards. But after a few years, I became disillusioned when people started buying packs just to try to get the insert cards. That wasn't why I was collecting, so I stopped wasting my money on the cards. However, I did like the 1992 Topps Gold parallel sets, so I'm going to try to finish my 1992 Topps Gold Winners set. I've got a couple hundred of the regular issue 1992 Topps Gold cards to trade as well as several hundred of the Winners variety as dupes as well, so if you are collecting either of those sets, let me know.
