What is Health Information Management?

HIM studentsToday professionals in every field rely increasingly on information to function effectively. Advances in technology have made the flow of information more available, more compehensive, more useful. Demand for health care information specialists--people with the knowledge and skills necessary to process, analyze, validate and distribute health care information in diverse practice environments has increased dramatically and far outstrips supply.

A career as a health information professional offers a unique opportunity to blend an interest in medicine with the multifaceted information management challenges of tomorrow. The Health Information Management program at the University of Alaska Southeast will prepare graduates for employment in this dynamic field.

Graduates will be able to perform a wide variety of technical health record functions in various settings.

    do I need for this job?

    Questioning Student

    The Health Information Management (HIM) program offers a distance delivered Associate of Applied Science degree through the Sitka Campus of the University of Alaska Southeast. The program is available in several states and has been endorsed by the state professional associations and the Western Interstate Consortium on Higher Education.

    The HIM program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs in collaboration with the American Medical Association and the American Health Information Management Association.

    Upon graduation, students are eligible to write the national certification exam; successful candidates earn the professional credential of Accredited Record Technician.
