Office of Continuing Education Workshops

The goal of the Office of Continuing Education's Workshop Program is to make it possible for individuals to obtain quality training beyond that ordinarily available in such a remote area. Workers requiring certification for hazardous occupations such as asbestos removal, hazardous painting, etc. can obtain training that leads directly to employment. Professionals such as real estate appraisers and agents, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and teachers can obtain accreditation without incurring the cost of travel. Agencies can cope with budget reductions by reducing travel-related expenditures for training. Additionally, we provide facilitation for cooperative training between agencies with similar training needs. Businesses can obtain basic skills training for new staff and new business starts.

Short courses for business and industry
With only a small and very culturally diverse population base from which to draw, marketing for our workshops must start with a needs assessment. We strive to offer the right program at the right time and the right price. We segment the market and form committees of key people in that market segment to structure the right combination of training. Sitka offers a small, friendly place to take their training and Alaska Airline's jet service is available only five minutes from the campus.

Hobby and general interest classes
Besides the Wild Foods class, other popular offerings include Emotional Survival, Native American Herbal Medicine, Black and White: a study of Old Films, Grant Writing, Fly Tying and Fly Fishing, Weaving, Holistic Health, Health Issues for CNAs, Introductory Internet Workshops, Portrait Painting, Raku Pottery, and others.

Scott Brylinsky's WILD FOODS
