The beauty of music is the ability to manipulate our emotions with the right chords and notes. We are able to pour our very souls into our work and have others hear that within the symphony of violins, violas, cellos, and other instruments. We love music because it beckons our ears to really hear and try to find ourselves without words.
In the days of Mozart, Beethoven, and other geniuses, the reaction of the audience would sometimes lead to fainting, sobbing, or even riots. But don't believe that our society today is so jaded. Stravinsky's Rites of Spring still cause some to leave the concert even before it has started. Some critics today say that it sounds too removed from the traditional composition, that it sounds overly modern. Stravinsky wrote this piece in the 1920s.
The Kaoru twins. Hailed as music prodigies, they were coveted for their duet playing. But most of all, they loved and respected each other like no other people on earth. They spent many fond afternoons playing in the garden on their piano. Eventually, they co-wrote Hikari Sasu Niwa, a piece that expressed the beauty of the world the way they saw it. Together. However, tragedy struck when they were scheduled to play. Miki fell ill and Kozue was forced to play alone. She ran away before the performance and hid in the garden for the rest of the night. She never touched the piano again. Her humiliation cost Miki dearly. Not only did she not play again, but she underwent changes in her personality that Miki himself sometimes does not understand. She disobeys, flirts (to put it loosely) with boys that Miki doesn't like, and basically forces him to look after her constantly. Miki plays Hikari Sasu Niwa often. Nanami once questioned him on why he dropped out of competition when he was easily the best player. He responded, almost casually, that he wasn't interested in that and their was really only one piece that he really wanted to play. When he hears Anshi playing it one day, it reminds him of his lost "shining thing". In the name of nostalgia, he forces himself to duel against Utena for the possession of the Rose Bride. Never again will he lose such a precious thing! But when he loses, he realizes that Anshi is not really the person he is looking for, nor will she be the "substitute" that he seeks to fill an empty spot in his heart. How odd it is that love makes us do the strangest things. Download this zipped mp3 of Hikari Sasu Niwa here.
