Genkai's good friends with Koenma and that was how Yusuke and Kuwabara met her, but only Yusuke ended up being her disciple. That's how Yusuke knows all those neat tricks of his. Genkai joined the Urameshi team during the Ankoku Bujutsukai but no one knew her identity until during the fight with that Dr. Ichi-something (sorry! All my YYH books are in Chinese and I don't know the pronunciation of the kanji!) when her mask was torn. Anyway, they find her looking younger (and prettier) and it turns out that when she uses her stance, her cells return to when they were younger so the impact of the stance would be greater (I hope I'll know that stance when I'm 60..hehe...).

They also learn later on that she and Toguro (younger) used to be on the same team when they were fighting in the tournament 50 years ago. Back then, Toguro was a human and Genkai could kick his butt. So Toguro longed for power and he became a youkai; Genkai didn't so she remained human. Then 50 years later, Toguro kills her (!) saying that she was ugly and stuff like that. Well, that really angered Yusuke so he killed Toguro.

Well, Genkai was brought back to life cuz she knew some people (*ahem* Koenma *ahem*), but before she went back to Ningenkai, she stopped by to visit Toguro. He was on his way to the most torturous part of hell and the funny thing was: he chose to go there to punish himself for his sins. Genkai told him he didn't have to go but he didn't listen. He told Genkai to take good care of Yusuke too. There are some rumors that Toguro and Genkai were more than just teammates...
