Thanks to Ronald Chan for sending me #5 :)
After being dumped by his girlfriend, Murakami Ichiya was pretty depressed, especially since Maiko, (his ex) dropped him for someone richer. While walking home through an alleyway, (while kicking a garbage can or two) Ichiya spotted a small china doll near a rubbish bin. He picked it up and brought it home, after saying that this was the only luxury item in his hovel of an apartment, he kissed the doll and lo and behold, it turned to a living, breathing girl. After recovering from the shock, Ichiya gathered that the doll's name was Min Min. She was a mage who got kicked out from her world by her master for being too stupid. He puts an enchantment on her to turn into a doll unless a human male kisses her on the lips. Min Min had been in the form of a doll for 500 years, trying to find someone who would kiss a talking doll. And as Min Min said to Ichiya, "You were the only weird person who would kiss a doll."
Ichiya was ofcourse overjoyed at first, a mage means his financial troubles are over. He can be rich for once dammit! Unfortunately, things never turn out the way you want it to. Min Min wasn't lying when she said she was a hopeless mage. She's incompetent to the point of being downright dangerous. Then ofcourse there's her impossible appetite for food, Ichiya's changed from being reasonably poor to utter destitution. The dear boy also suffered from a heart attack every morning since Min Min insisted on kissing him every morning while he was asleep to return to her human form.
In the meantime, Maiko asked Ichiya for help. Maiko had lost the ring that her new boyfriend had lent to her, the ring of Venus was supposed to grant love to the person who wore it (it's also *very* expensive). Ichiya agreed to look for the ring after Maiko offered money. With Min Min's help, he was able to locate it. Apparently, one of Maiko's ex (before Ichiya) named Kunitachi stole the ring. Kunitachi was a science fantasy freak and part time model who collected anything which might have magical properties. Kunitachi was interested in Min Min straight away, he believed that Min Min would lead him to the "magical world" where dragons, and magic do exist.
The next character who burst into Ichiya was Amon, Min Min's fiancé who came to collect her from the human world. Min Min bullied him to make a promise that he'll marry her when they were children. Amon agreed reluctantly, he could have conveniently forgot about it but being a noble (and rather stupid) man, he decided to keep his promise. Instant hate flared up between Ichiya and Amon, it was probably caused more by jealousy in Amon's part. He still can't understand what Min Min could see in Ichiya (otherwise known as "that weak guy").
Throughout the story, there were countless attempts by Amon to break Ichiya and Min-Min's relationship. There was also this tiny problem which prevented Min Min and Amon to return back to their homeland.
This is a rather unusual work from Asagiri sensei, for one thing her characters are actually different to her other manga! Asagiri's work tend to use a certain "type", there's the "bad boy", "sweet girl" and "cool ice guy". Ichiya's greediness is rather refreshing really, as well as Kunitachi's obsession with magic in general. There was also plenty of amusing comments about the stupidity of magicians in general from Ichiya. They may have the power and the cool costume, but they seem to lack the brain capacity to use it properly. One thing I really like about this particular one is the costuming of the charachters, very Arabian night in some pictures.
Other Characters
Murikami Ichiya
Min Min's master, a smart serious student who's a little too obsessed with money.
Kunitachi Shigeru
Miako's ex before Ichiya, she dated Kunitachi for his looks before dumping him for Ichiya's brain. Kunitachi works as part time model, and lives in a pretty luxurious apartment by himself. He was overjoyed when he can finally wield the sword and wear the armour he kept in his collection when he met Amon.
Shiva
Amon's servant, I was halfway through the manga before I realised that Shiva's male. He looked very feminine in the beginning of the manga, and less so in the end. His loyalty to Amon is uncontested, he's also the best craftman in the magic world. His rather cryptic remarks tend to annoy Ichiya, especially since Shiva loves tormenting people by being rather vague.
Amon
Crown prince of the blue kingdom, protector of the world from darkness. His power comes from the sun by summoning the sword of light. Studies with Min Min under a famous master magician, but he's a lot smarter when it comes to studying magic than Min Min. Forced into an engagement by Min Min, eventhough Min Min herself forgot that she even made that demmand. Extremely dense when it comes to the "real world".
Roki
The last remaining darkling in Min Min's world. He was placed under the care of Min Min's teacher. Shiva absolutely abhor him for being a darkling. Urged Amon several times to destroy or at least exiled Roki somewhere far away.
