Various Characters
Aragorn
A Dunadan, the 16th and last Chieftain of the North. He was secretly
raised in Rivendell as Estel until twenty when he was told of his
lineage. During the WR, he was among the Company of the
Ring. He was
also a leader in the Battles of Hornburg, Pelennor Plains (where, with
an army beside that accompanied him, helped defeated Sauron's forces)
and the Morannon (where he was one of the captains of the Army of the
North). After the WR, he became the King of the Reunited Kingdom as
Elessar Telcontar and married Arwen.
Celeborn
A Sindarin elf, Prince of Doriath, kinsman of Thingol and
husband of Galadriel. They later settled in Lorien and he became the
Lord of the Galadhrim. During the WR, he led the forces of Lorien
against Dol Guldur. After the WR, he grew weary of Middle-Earth after
Galadriel went over the Sea; he eventually went to Rivendell. It is not
known if he followed his wife to Valinor.
Company of the Ring
Also called the Fellowship of the Ring, the group of nine who
accompanied the Ringbearer during the first part of his quest to Mount
Doom. They are composed of Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Meriadoc
Brandybuck and Peregrin Took for the Hobbits;
Aragorn and Boromir for
the Men; Legolas for the
Elves; and Gimli for the Dwarves.
Elrond
The son of Eärendil and Elwing, brother of Elros Tar-Minyatur.
As a Peredhil (half-elven), he had to choose which race he belongs to at
the end of the FA; he chose to belong to to the Elven-kind. He was the
founder and master of Rivendell until the end of the TA. He was also the
bearer of Vilya, the Ring of Air, which he had received from Gil-Galad.
He married Celebrian, the daughter of Galadriel and
Celeborn and their
children were Elladan, Ellohir and Arwen.
Eomer
Nephew of King Theoden and brother of Eowyn. He was the Third
Marshal of Rohan in charge of the Eastmark. During the WR, he fought
valiantly at the Battles of Hornburg, Pelennor Fields and the Morannon.
At the end of the WR, he became the King of Rohan and a close friend of Elessar.
Eowyn
Sister of Eomer. During the WR, she, along with Meriadoc
Brandybuck, had slain the Lord of the Nazgul during the Battle of the
Pelennor Fields. After the WR, she married Faramir and became the Lady
of Ithilien.
Erkenbrand
A Rider of Rohan, he was the master of Westfold and Hornburg. He
led the Rohirrim forces at the Second Battle of the Fords of Isen as
well as the Battle of Hornburg. At the end of the WR, King Eomer made
him the Marshal of Westmark.
Frodo Baggins
Hobbit of the Shire, nephew of Bilbo Baggins and Ringbearer
during the WR. In his 33rd birthday, Bilbo gave him the One Ring. He
escaped to Rivendell on TA 3018 and there volunteered to undertake the
Quest to Mount Doom. After the WR, because of the pain he still suffer
in both his body and mind he went over the Sea along with the Last
Riding of the Keepers of the Rings.
Galadriel
The daughter of Finarfin and wife of Celeborn. She was one of
the leaders of the Noldorin rebellion against the Valar. She is the only
surviving leader after the Wars of Beleriand ended. During the SA, she
had became the Queen of Lorien, which she made with Doriath in mind and
sustained with the help of her own power and that of the Ring of Water,
Nenya. During the WR, she gave shelter to the Fellowship of the Ring and
refused the One Ring when it was offered to her by Frodo
Baggins. As a
reward for this and her tireless opposition to Sauron, she was allowed
to enter Valinor and after the WR, was among those of the
Eldar
who went over the Sea.
Gandalf
Initially Gandalf the Grey, he was one of the Istari and was
probably the chief instrument of Sauron's downfall. On his arrival on
ME, Cirdan gave him Narya, the Ring of Fire. On TA 2941, he persuaded
Thorin to reclaim Erebor, with an unexpected result of Bilbo obtaining
the One Ring. During the WR, he was among the Company of the Ring but
was slain in a battle with the Balrog of Moria. He was sent back as
Gandalf the White because his task was not completed. He then played
important roles in the conflicts against Saruman, during the Battle of
Pelennor Fields and the Morannon. After the WR, he went over the Sea
with the Last Riding of the Keepers of the Ring.
Glorfindel
Eldarin elf of Rivendell. He had lead the forces of Imladris
against the Witchking of Angmar in the Battle of Fornost at TA 1975.
During the WR, he met and protected the Ringbearer and his companions on
the way to Rivendell as well as fought the Nazgul on the Ford of Bruinen.
Lord of the Nazgul
The leader of the Nazgul and mightiest of Sauron's servants. On about TA
1300, disguised as the Witchking of Angmar, he made war against the Northern
Kingdoms with the purpose of weakening the northern Dunedain. He was
defeated during the Battle of Fornost. Along with the other Nazgul, he
succeeded in taking Minas Ithil. He renamed it Minas Morgul where he
became the master. During the WR, he led the search for Frodo Baggins
whom he had seriously wounded at Weathertop. He led the Siege of Gondor
and on the Battle of Pelennor Field, he was slain by Eowyn and Merry
Brandybuck.
Nazgul
Also called the Ringwraiths or the Black Riders; they are the slaves of the
Nine Rings of Men and chief of the servants of Sauron. They were invisible, powerful
creatures with sharp sense of
smell. They work chiefly at night and no ordinary weapon can harm them.
Any person who comes near them would be affected by the Black Breath.
They were active throughout the WR, from their Siege of Gondor, Frodo's
flight to Rivendell and the Battle of Pelennor Field. The remaining
Nazgul were killed when the One Ring was unmade in Orodruin.
Saruman
Initially Saruman the White, he was one and chief of the Istari.
At first, he was truly a good friend of the Free People but later it was
discovered that he desired the One Ring. Eventually, he made Isengard
his fortress, built an army of Orcs and Dunlendings and harassed
Rohan
and Fangorn. During the WR, he sent an Orc-band against the Company of
the Ring, hoping to obtain the Ring; it failed. Isengard was attacked
and captured by Ents of Fangorn Forest. Afterwards,
Gandalf cast him out
of the order of Istari. Later, when he was released by the Ents, he came
to the Shire and there he was killed by Grima.
Sauron
Originally a Maia of Aulë, he became the greatest and chief of
Melkor's servants. He rejoined Melkor in his war during the conflicts of
Beleriand during the FA. After the Great Battle, he fled and hid
somewhere in ME. In the SA, he gathered enough power to build is
stronghold in Mordor. During that time, he corrupted races of Men and
seduced the Gwaith-i-Mírdain of Eregion; they created the Rings of
Power. He then started the War of the Elves and Sauron but was defeated
by Gil-galad and forces from Numenor. Later, the Numenorians him to
forced to submit to them and they took him back to Numenor. He corrupted
them until they renounced the Valar and began to worship Melkor. The
Valar reacted by calling on Iluvatar which brought upon the destruction
of Numenor; Sauron's body perished during the catastrophe. He returned
to Mordor and harassed Gondor until he was defeated in the Battle of
Dagorlad by the Last Alliance. During the TA, he plotted on weakening
the Dunedain Kingdoms and regaining the One Ring and these plans
resulted in the events of the War of the Ring. With the unmaking of the
One Ring, Sauron became so weakened that he was unable to take form
again.
Thranduil
A Sindarin elf, King of the Silvan Elves of Northern Mirkwood
and father of Legolas. He led the elves (as the Elvenking) during the
Battle of the Five Armies in TA 2941. During the WR, he defended against
an attack from Dol Guldur. His kingdom flourished well into the FoA.
