The San Gregorio House was built in 1865 by George Washington Tully Carter. The hotel and saloon were the first buildings to be built here by the U.S. settlers. It was built on the road from Spanishtown to Pescadero, just north of San Gregorio Creek. The La Honda road to Redwood City had not yet been opened to here.
When the railroad never came to San Gregorio by 1869, Carter sold the hotel. After passing through several owners, it was sold to John Evans in 1875. Evans enlarged the hotel to its present size and added some of the outbuildings. Evans sold the hotel in 1888 to Jesse Palmer. Frank Bell became Palmer's partner and married Palmer's daughter Ellen.
