Yes, I Am Broke
Well, I went on a spending spree before I left for Texas and bought tons of freakin’ movies. We’re gonna knock out 2 of them (Hostel and Wolf Creek), right here.
Now, both of these are supposed to be based on true events. We know how that goes, though. You take a real story and embellish it for the screen. It’s the nature of film. But let’s move on.
Hostel : I’m ashamed to say that I didn’t catch this one in the theater. Heard all about it. Wanted to see it. Never got around to it.
Basically, 3 kids are kicking around Europe and end up getting a tip that there’s a hostel where chicks just can’t wait to fuck Americans. The guys go there and end up becoming unwilling participants in a high-priced “pay to kill someone” business.
There are those that say too much time is spent with the kids just drinking and fucking. I say: “How can there be too much drinking and fucking? Are you nuts? Or gay? Or a girl?”
Seriously, the time spent with the characters pays off in spades. You genuinely like these kids and when the shit comes down, it hurts even more.
Now, I don’t say this, ever, so get ready to make a note in your diary: There were times where I felt physically ill at what was happening. Not because it was gory, (It actually wasn’t all that graphic.) but because I really, really didn’t want what was happening to happen to the guys I’d just spent a half hour getting to know. I wanted to hang out with them and I almost wished the movie had been nothing but these 3 dudes running around Amsterdam and getting shit-faced and screwing hookers.
But I got what I paid for and it was well worth it.
